Authorities say a man is accused of breaking into a Phoenix apartment and helping himself to tortillas and soup. Court documents show that 31-year-old Jerry Christopher Drane was arrested March 1 on suspicion of criminal trespassing. According to charging documents, a female occupant smelled something burning. She found Drane in the kitchen cooking tortillas on top of a stove burner. She yelled for her roommate and both women demanded Drane to leave. They told police Drane then went onto the balcony and began eating a can of soup. Responding officers say he showed signs of being intoxicated and was subsequently arrested.

The other day a FR thread had a guy breaking in taking a shower and making pork chops. Lots of hungry burglars lately.

These gals are very lucky he was more interested in the soup than raping and killing them. They might want to consider buying a gun and keeping the door locked.

Just pretend that door is the USA/Mexico border.

No problem.

I'm working on a short story in which a runaway girl breaks into a man's house and cleans up the place, hoping he will come home and decide to keep her around and provide shelter for her in exchange for...well, I'm still working that out but I'd like to keep it PG rated as the girl is only 16. So more of a father/daughter type thing. I'm thinking of making her older so something more can develop but if I make her too old, she won't be able to be a teen runaway and that's important to the story as I already have the plotlines worked out (she ends up becoming a popular country music singer).

The man is a divorced truck driver and is away from the house up to a week at a time. Lives in a small ranch house that is falling into decrepitude. I think it could be a good story - maybe even turned into one of those LIFETIME TV movies.

Maybe the girl is his niece. His sister’s daughter. And his sister died or moved to another state and the niece wants to keep living in the home town with her high school friends and band, volleyball, choir, and choir practice. And maybe she has an order sister or female cousin who is going to community college and also needs a rent free place to live. Her choir practice teacher turns out to be the truck driver’s love interest. And the truck driver winds up driving the motor home with every body on board to the various concerts and dance halls.

It’s a sign of the times that that was my first thought as well. If he was high on PCP instead of booze, this story could have ended very differently.

Basically the story arc is that the girl is a runaway from a highly dysfunctional home (alcoholic and abusive parents) and she is tormented at school due to her shyness and "ugly duckling" appearance. The last straw is that she is removed from her home by social services and put in foster care. She is sexually assaulted in her foster home and runs away.

She's an excellent guitar player and once she gets into this truck driver's home, she starts singing the songs as she's alone most of the time. But she never wants to go back to school (due to the bullying and emotional abuse she already suffered) so needs to convince the truck driver to shelter her "outside the system."

Still working on the angle of the relationship with the truck driver. Is it romantic or "father/daughter".

Anyway, truck driver comes home one night and hears her singing. Is blown away. Insists that she sing in front of an audience. So in a "Coal Miner's Daughter" type moment, he takes her to a dive bar and convinces her to get up on stage and sing a song with the live band and they go nuts for her. Also, she has fully shed her "ugly duckling" and becomes a real beauty. When she turns legal age of 18, she goes professional and the story ends when she plays a concert in her hometown (the one she ran away from).

So basically it's a high-school dropout runaway who through the guidance of this truck driver, becomes a major country music star.

So I think it's a decent storyline that could even turn into a novel but damn, writing is hard! I keep re-writing everything and then later I often realize that what I wrote before was probably better than what i changed it to.

Thanks for the suggestions by the way. Writing is just a hobby of mine and hopefully I'll get something published at some point.

There is a short story, “Too Soon a Woman” by Dorothy Johnson, that resembles a bit the story you are working on. And in keeping with the thread, it involves eating as well. I had my students read it for literature, but most didn’t get the last line.

Mr Drane only has to tell the authorities that he identifies as a Latina female. This should get him out of any trouble.

Have her be 17 and on the run for over a year, that’s why she’s tired of running. The attraction could build carefully until her 18th birthday

Make him a truck driving serial killer. That way you can work some pathos into the story. /s

Well, the abusive foster father needs to show about 3/4ths of the way into the story to get pummelled by the truck driver, then arrested for abuse. Then it turns out many more girls come forward.

At 16 there are plenty of online options to finish high school.
