With a correct answer just seconds before the final bell, Grove City College defeated Harvard University to capture the championship in the second annual American History and Western Civilization Challenge Bowl over the weekend at The King’s College in New York City.
Grove City College’s team of Noah Gould, Carolyn Hartwick and Elena Peters racked up 537 points to the Harvard squad’s 526, securing the lead and ultimate victory by correctly identifying 16th-century Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe.
The matchup Saturday was the result of preliminary action in the American Heritage Education Foundation-sponsored event. The foundation invited four northeastern colleges to vie for the championship. Host-school The King’s College and Princeton University were also selected. The foundation promotes civics and history education and sees the bowl as a way to encourage teaching in those fields and rewarding students for their mastery of American history and Western civilization.
In the semi-finals Friday, Grove City College faced off against Princeton’s team and The King’s College went up against Harvard. Team members each presented a speech on a topic and then proceeded to game-show style toss-up rounds, complete with buzzers to claim the query. King’s lost to Harvard and Grove City College bested Princeton’s team with a final score of 672 to 540.
In the finals, Gould, Hartwick and Peters, who are all part of the college’s Trustee Scholar program, and the team from the Abigail Adams Institute at Harvard battled back and forth over the toss up questions. Going down momentarily and then up, until “literally the last question,” says Jason R. Edwards, professor of history and coach of the Grove City College team.
“They represented the college in the very best way possible by not only impressing all with their academic acumen, but also with their gracious spirits and infectious personalities — and by that I do not mean that Carolyn was sick the whole time – though she was,” Edwards said. “It truly was a team effort and the students are so grateful for the support they received and were so tickled as well to discover that a large contingent of Grove City College students cheered them on as they gathered to watch the livestream of the event.” Grove City College took the championship on a toss-up question but they also achieved the most points over the course of the contest in the speech component, which included a memorized speech with extended prep time and one with limited prep time and notes.
Each student on the winning team also won a $4,000 cash scholarship.
Harvard would be a champion at Unamerican History and anti-Western Civilization.
Grove City certainly won that one by a nose.

Yes, but for Harvard to get that far, the admissions office must have made a mistake in admitting those particular students.

Harvard STEM is good, but they’ve sh*t upon their lib arts areas...following along with the rest of the (rotten) Ivy League.
Yearly tuition at Harvard is $67,580.
At Grove City? $17,900.
Delicious Irony. You DON’T always get what you pay for.
Grove City, along with Michigan’s Hillsdale College, are the only two institutions of higher learning in this country which refuse to take Federal money.
(I once looked up the Moon crater...and nothing good comes from drunken fights involving sabers...)
This is NOT fair. Harvard and Princeton students have to learn “Woke History,” which Grove city students do not. Who has time to learn ACTUAL history and still be peak woke??
Harvard is coasting on a reputation from decades ago. It has transformed into an easy school that is hard to get into, and it’s main purpose is to sheep dip the whelps of the right people into the swamp.
But a list as long as your arm is much more difficult and rigorous, and I truly believe blind testing of recent graduates would fully bear this out in any discipline except the social “sciences”. Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Colorado School of mines, New Mexico Tech, Cal Tech, MIT, The Air Force Academy, Annapolis, Georgia Tech, UTA, and many others turn our far better educated kids.
Every honest person can see this with their own eyes.

FIVE YEARS LATER......The agent opens an envelope sent to his office. Inside the envelope is a letter and a check for $50,000. The agent is awe-struck, who would possibly send him $50,000? He reads the letter enclosed...

Five years ago, I came into your office wanting to become an actor in Hollywood , you told me I needed to change my name. Determined to make it with my God-given birth name, I refused. You told me I would never make it in Hollywood with a name like Penis van Lesbian.
After I left your office, I thought about what you said. I decided you were right. I had to change my name. I had too much pride to return to your office, so I signed with another agent. I would never have made it without changing my name, so the enclosed check is a token of my appreciation.

Sounds about right, the Harvard Law Debate always gets their clock cleaned when they debate the Jailhouse Lawyers.
