Intelligent design gets even dumber
The Washington Post ^ | 03/08/19 | Jerry A. Coyne

Posted on 03/16/2019 11:26:56 AM PDT by Simon Green

The notion of “intelligent design” arose after opponents of evolution repeatedly failed on First Amendment grounds to get Bible-based creationism taught in the public schools. Their solution: Take God out of the mix and replace him with an unspecified “intelligent designer.” They added some irrelevant mathematics and fancy biochemical jargon, and lo: intelligent design, which scientists have dubbed “creationism in a cheap tuxedo.”

But the tuxedo is fraying, for intelligent design has been rejected not just by biologists but also by judges who recognize it as poorly disguised religion. Nevertheless, its advocates persist. Among the most vocal is Michael J. Behe, a biology professor at Lehigh University whose previous books, despite withering criticism from scientists, have sold well in a country where 76 percent of us think God had some role in human evolution.

Behe does not rely on the Bible as a science textbook. Rather, he admits that evolution occurs by natural selection sifting new mutations and that all species are related via common ancestors. Where he parts company with other biologists is in his claim that the important mutations producing new types of organisms are not random accidents but are deliberately installed by a designer with a plan. A pious Catholic, Behe sees the designer as the Christian God but concedes that there could be other mutation-makers. These designed mutations solve what he sees as a problem for natural selection: the origin of some complex biochemical features. Such features appear to defy Darwinian explanation because, claims Behe, they can’t function until all the parts are in place. (Unguided natural selection requires that every step in the evolution of a complex feature must enhance an organism’s fitness.) Ergo, these “irreducibly complex” systems must have been forged by a designer who made simultaneous changes in several genes.

You are presuming God is IN our Universe.

That is not demonstrable.

Not really interested in getting into a discussion on this! You have your opinions I have mine.

So you came here to propose an opinion you're not prepared to defend?

What was the point?

Your persistence in trying to get me into a discussion I don’t want to do kind of proves my point!

I was initially a double major: engineering and biology. I was well within the top half of the top one percent of college-bound students, with two science and five math scholastic awards. My IQ has always tested well above 150. (I was incidentally voted Most Intelligent in my senior class.)

I’m not even close to defending the Evolutionists. It is a belief system, and not a convincing one.

Evolution is primarily treasured and protected for its philosophical implications.

I generally leave these threads alone, but since you were being gratuitously - and disingenuously - condescending, I am making an exception.

The truth is that numerous Evolution skeptics and/or ID scientists are not Christian Creationists.

The vaunted advocates of skepticism do not permit serious skepticism of their Hypothetical Sacred Bovine Antecedent.

And the process does not require random monkeys typing on keyboards.

Ok, then explain to me what the process is. Explain to me how we go from elements and simple compounds.. to a single cell with a nucleus, various cell organelles, cytoplasm and DNA encoding intelligent information.

And don’t just leave it at “evolution”. Go through the whole flow.

I believe that all the useful, productive genetic information out there is all there ever has been and ever will be - scattered throughout creation waiting to combine, as necessary, to allow the creature to adapt (or evolve as you will) to deal with a dynamic, constantly changing, world. Yes, it is done via natural selection, but that’s done with genetic info God put there from the beginning, not by any random “mutation”. Scripture tells us God made his various classes of life “in their kinds”, clearly indicating they had the ability to adapt, change and multiply in response to their environment. Useful information has a creator and all the necessary information has been there from the beginning, or at least since the 6th day.

There are three realities....The emotional world of feeling and thinking. The physical world of objects. The mathematical world of design. Does anyone seriously NOT think that some higher being didn't have its hand in the intricate mathematical world, the world that gives us logic for feelings to be tempered by thinking and formulas which structure objects?

(I don't know if this is my own thing or something I read somewhere)

For evolution to even get a start, one has to believe that atoms form molecules and molecules and atoms form into even more complex things, and the whole ball of wax becomes all living things as we now know it/them.

But, all of that started with the assumption that atoms just came into existence, and that their composition was accidental. And, even more accidental was the sudden appearance of the subatomic particles which went into the creation of atoms.

The biggest puzzle of IT ALL, is the rules. For anything to exist, there are rules, whether mathematical rules or creationist rules or both.

So, WHO created the rules that govern everything in existence? If not a WHO, then what? Rules and ‘things’ do not just materialize or come into existence.

Dreaming? The evidence for scientists creating hoaxes regarding evolution is well documented.

Same with climate change ‘scisntists’.

Theres a difference between actual science and the faux-pseudo scientism pushed by people with their agendas fueled by greed and hatred.

I'm not aware of any point you are trying to make, at least insofar as it involves my desire to critically assess your mathematics statement.

It all came from something, somewhere, some process, some big boom, whatever. I give that mechanism, whatever it’s nature, a 3-letter name beginning with G. No amount of semantics or philosophy or explanation about that mechanism can change that. I’m glad we come to understand more and more about that mechanism over time... but that doesn’t change the name I give it.

"...these “irreducibly complex” systems must have been forged by a designer who made simultaneous changes in several genes."

Spend an hour or two watching videos about intelligent design on YouTube, and you too will come away with the conclusion that a Master Designer created the bedrock nuts and bolts of all living organisms.

At the molecular level, the systems in our bodies resemble (and operate like) actual factories, with machines of all sorts performing the myriad tasks that keep us alive.

The claim that these complex systems arose through sheer accident over millions of years seems ludicrous after closely studying them.

Atoms are essentially an erector set for life. Assemble them together correctly and you have life.

Not quite. The 'spark of life' is the final ingredient.
