Those extra hundred bodies probably were due to a variant of “shot, shovel, and shut up.”
The National Guard was patrolling with live rounds in the magazine, and rioters took that pretty seriously. The dead bodies were of those rioters who had some sort of confrontation with their sworn enemies -- other rioters. :^)
