Well, if the readers of Harpers's Weekly want illustrations of war like the one in Europe, they are soon going to get their wish in spades, a whole lot closer to home...

Well, if the readers of Harpers's Weekly
want illustrations of war like the one in Europe, they are soon going to get their wish in spades, a whole lot closer to home...Speaking of illustrations, for some time now Harper's has been purchasing pictures from New York portrait photographer Mathew Brady (self-portrait below) and publishing them as wood cuts. The most recent was on April 30 (also shown below). If Brady can figure out how to make his studio mobile he could provide illustrations of the great outdoors.

Thank you.My pleasure.
The posts aren't going anywhere. Maybe you can catch up during the week. We have a relatively slow period for a few months where there won't be a lot of midweek postings to keep up with so we can concentrate on the Harper's.

[Continued from May 18
May 22, SUNDAY. At the French Theatre Thursday night with Ellie, William Schermerhorn and wife, Mrs. Gregory Peters, and Murray Hoffman. Highly satisfactory. They tell me its second- or third-rate French acting, but it is far above our standard, in good taste, simplicity, attention to detail, and naturalness or reality. Met with the Law School Committee of Columbia College and agreed to invite as lectures Bidwell, Lord, Evarts, Sedgwick, Noyes, and Bradford. Mr. Ruggles knocked up with quite serious rheumatism in right shoulder.

Oh, snap! I wonder if George has a tooth-ache!
Thomas Meagher’s (you say it “Marr”) biography is a real, rip-snorting page-turner. Among other things, he escaped from internment in Australia.

I looked it up. I believe the preferred name is Second Italian War of Independence. There were two alternate names but I forget what they are. I’m just amazed that King Victor Emanuel II of Sardinia is a player. I didn’t know Sardinia was a major independent European power.

I think the crown of Sardinia is a relic of Napoleon’s time. I’ve looked for years for a good history of Sardinia, but there doesn’t seem to be one.
