Renoir was edgy for his time.

In the beginning, maybe. But with time he became the one who gave the patrons what they wanted, not somebody who was truly pushing art in new directions.

His use of light in hie Impressionistic works and his subject matter, ordinary scenes from life especially urban, were radical for the time.

Compare him with Monet for the use of light and to Degas and Manet for urban scenes. They all went further than Renoir did, IMHO.

Renoir may not be as bad as this anti-Renoir cult says - I'm not the one to say - but there does seem to be something unserious and frilly in many of his paintings and something awkward in others.

This is probably the first time I have given a thought to Renoir in 50 years or more. I guess I should have somehow been offended over the years.

Just my uneducated ignorance saved me, I suppose. :)

Run away to Tahiti with Gauguin and paint Tahitians?

Eventually the avant garde becomes the garde.

Driven out of the US market but they still sell a lot of cars around the world. But honestly did you ever say to yourself 'I really want a French car'? Right. Didn't Renault just recently merge with Nissan?

That’s exactly the picture I think of when I think of Renoir. That chick is such a fox.

Agreed. This is the stuff that fetches huge prices at auctions these days.

Looks like a drop cloth. It also looks like something I could paint, so I equate that with "It ain't art."

Renoir-loathing is a default position in today’s art world and seems to gather more adherents in the wider population each year.

Picasso was pretty amazing, actually. He could paint anything, but chose what he wanted to paint and how.

His chosen style, however, is not for all.

In full disclosure, I own several early Cubist pieces from Picasso that we retrieved from buyers from the Nazis when the laws changed back to what one would expect (a thief cannot grant good title), which have great emotional appeal to me because of family history, so I am very biased.

My daughter dressed as the “girl with watering can” for Halloween one year. It was cute.

“It is beautiful, but since it is not subversive or edgy or offensive, people hate it...”

I think that is the issue.

Renoir also gets an unfair reputation of being anti-Semitic. No, he hated a Jewish guy named Charles Ephrussi (a well-known art critic of the time) and said crappy things about Ephrussi, including slurs about being Jewish, which were typical of the French.

That is his daughter. Like many impressionist painters Renoir painted friends and familiar places.

When I was 13 in 1960, my father was seriously looking at the Facel Vega 500, a coach-built French luxury car with big Chrysler V8. I read all about it in the car magazines that my mother bought for me and was pretty excited at the prospect of being able to drive one in the fields of our farm. Some years later, I sort of had a hankerin’ for a Renault R5 Turbo, the street version of the rear engined rally car that had maybe 250 HP in a package weighing a little more than 2,000 pounds.
