Do you despise Renoir? You must know you are not alone. Renoir-loathing is a default position in todays art world and seems to gather more adherents in the wider population each year. Expressions of it crop up in the strangest places.
In 2015, provocateur Max Geller organized a Renoir Sucks at Painting protest outside Bostons Museum of Fine Arts. Activists brandished signs calling Renoir an aesthetic terrorist and saying: Other art is worth your while! Renoir paints a steaming pile! and God hates Renoir. (When I called Gellers protests sophomoric in the Boston Globe he challenged me to a duel on Boston Common; but that is another sadly anticlimactic story.)
More recently, the British author Max Porter captured the quality of the repugnance Renoir inspires in his 2019 novel, Lanny: I can usually see a way to understand terrible things; satanic worship, decaffeinated coffee, cosmetic surgery, but Renoirs portrait of Madame de Bonnières? No. It cannot be understood or forgiven.

You can have my share.
I was never mad for those cars either.
Huh?
Renoir helped start the impressionistic school of painting.
He isn’t my favorite, but his work is amazing.
Yes, better Renoir than Marcel Duchamp’s toilet bowl as art or Rothko’s colorful bands.. Renoir rocks.
No. Do you know who is a terrible painter? Picasso. He never learned - or couldn't do - perspective, so he invented cubism.
No! We despise the attitude of the Washington Post. It's a "mental case" in print, if there ever was one.
It is beautiful, but since it is not subversive or edgy or offensive, people hate it...
C'mon! Le Car?!
In defense of Picasso, he was well schooled in the fundamentals. He could paint in any style he wanted.
Renoir was edgy for his time. His use of light in hie Impressionistic works and his subject matter, ordinary scenes from life especially urban, were radical for the time.
Is that Vampiras mom?
My daughter is an artist, as is her significant other. They both make a good living at it. The art they produce for themselves is beautiful. I dont really get the stuff they make for commissions, art shows, or sale in their respective galleries.
But when you count on stuff to buy bread, you make what sells.
Well, that is better than most. Very decorative anyway.
Dead white male. No wonder woke curators hate him.
People actually PAY for this? Dang, I’m in the wrong line of work!
It was subversive for its day.
It lacks the “finished” level of detail of the academic works, which were done on a whole other level of painstaking skill. The point of impressionism is the impression. The old realist stuff you can get lost in. One of those guys would have rendered that satin dress almost photographically, but more gorgeous.
Have you forgotten AMC’s foray into the “Eagle” brand?
