One giant ... lie? Why so many people still think the moon landings were faked

It took 400,000 Nasa employees and contractors to put Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon in 1969 – but only one man to spread the idea that it was all a hoax. His name was Bill Kaysing.

It began as “a hunch, an intuition”, before turning into “a true conviction” – that the US lacked the technical prowess to make it to the moon (or, at least, to the moon and back). Kaysing had actually contributed to the US space programme, albeit tenuously: between 1956 and 1963, he was an employee of Rocketdyne, a company that helped to design the Saturn V rocket engines. In 1976, he self-published a pamphlet called We Never Went to the Moon: America’s Thirty Billion Dollar Swindle, which sought evidence for his conviction by means of grainy photocopies and ludicrous theories. Yet somehow he established a few perennials that are kept alive to this day in Hollywood movies and Fox News documentaries, Reddit forums and YouTube channels.

Despite the extraordinary volume of evidence (including 382kg of moon rock collected across six missions; corroboration from Russia, Japan and China; and images from the Nasa Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter showing the tracks made by the astronauts in the moondust), belief in the moon-hoax conspiracy has blossomed since 1969. Among 9/11 truthers, anti-vaxxers, chemtrailers, flat-Earthers, Holocaust deniers and Sandy Hook conspiracists, the idea that the moon landings were faked isn’t even a source of anger any more – it is just a given fact.

One month before Apollo 11 lifted off, my Dad took me to Cape Canaveral to see the rocket on the launching pad. Although we stood a mile away from the rocket, and the service structure covered the top of it, I knew without a doubt what it was.

Most of the people I have met who don’t believe we went to the moon are too young to remember the Apollo missions.

I haven’t been there in years. My son, the space geek went a couple years ago with some buddies. They were jealous since his NASA credentials allowed him full access to the entire base. He said he drove up to the launch pad and walked around. Super cool. He’s on the flight operations team for a satellite array.

That's so cool! My daughter wants to work for NASA. She just graduated high school and her request for a gift was to go to KSC. I think I had more fun than she did. Last time I went was before she was born, so a lot has changed since then.

Concorde never, ever made money. _Every_ flight lost money. If it made money, they would have fixed the problem(s) that led to the crash and kept flying it.

I am no conspiracy nut but i do wonder about the vaxx stuff.
around 8 years ago i got a flu shot.
A week later my left leg started shaking soon after my right leg was shaking.
i started to think i was coming down with Parkinson’s disease or something.
went on the internet and was astonished to find other flu shot recipients suffering the same symptoms some so bad that they were shaking so violently they could hardly walk.
Anyways it’s subsided mostly but not completely i feel like i will never get back to being completely normal.
My doc many times says “it wasn’t the flu shot” yea right just a weird coincidence.
Now every year when i get my check-up and asked if i want the shot i always say NO THANKS.
Oh yea haven’t caught the flu since either.

There was a time in my life that I believed what Walter Cronkite told me on the evening news. Our government, after killing Kennedy, needed distractions. One was Viet Nam. Another one was the Great Society and race-baiting. Still another one was the space program and it's "race to the moon". We were certainly distracted. Whether or not it was all faked is a legitimate question to ask of a government and news media that we have all learned the hard way is not worthy of our trust. I, for one no longer think we actually went to the moon much less landed on it.

Look at this Russia stole the election hoax, or better yet global warming. Think of how much money has been spent on windmills to save the planet. If carbon dioxide were a real problem, we'd be nearly 100% nuclear powered.
