Clemson’s Dabo Swinney to assistants: Spend time with your own kids, or you’re fired

Rare is it that Dabo Swinney issues threats. The Clemson football coach dances with his players and takes his assistants on annual skiing trips. Fear is not part of his playbook.

But Swinney makes an exception when it comes to safeties coach Mickey Conn, whose oldest son, Brodey, plays on the same football and baseball teams as Swinney’s youngest son, Clay.

“Dabo says, ‘If you don’t go to the games, I’m going to fire you,’” Conn said.

And so Conn goes to the games. He values his employment. He then returns to the Tigers’ facility grateful to work for a boss who emphasizes the importance of family time.

Clemson has earned bids to the College Football Playoff each of the past four seasons, meaning more eyeballs on the program, but also meaning more time in the film room, more time perfecting schemes and more time away from home for the assistant coaches.

Tigers assistants don’t suffer from burnout, though. Not when working for Swinney, who makes sure his staffers carve out time to spend with their loved ones.

I think he will eventually be coach at Alabama. That is if he wants to.

Admittedly, as a Temple University (The Most Dynamic University in The United States) alum and long time program supporter, I was watching “A Football Life” (NFL Game Pass) and Bruce Arians was saying the exact same thing half a dozen years ago.
The game isn’t that complicated, you don’t need to be in the building 24 hours a day. Work life balance, b*tches.

A man who doesn’t spend time with his family, can never be a real man.

It is true that people need to find a way to balance work and family. But, balance doesn’t mean you ignore work, or how are you going to feed your kids?

Sorry, boss, I couldn’t get everything done, because I spent time with my kids, as per your orders.

How is he going to like that?

Dabo is an amazing guy. His real life story is a great testament to perseverance. At one of his first press conferences after being hired as Head Coach a reporter asked him if he thought the school made a mistake in hiring him. He calmly said no and next question. Two trips to the White House later he showed them that he may have been right. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” is also one of the first things he said after winning the first championship. I love that. As the father of a Tiger if he left tomorrow I would say thanks for the ride. I would also cry a lot.

Long time SEC fan. There would be A LOT of reasons for Dabo to stay at Clemson. He has built a machine and brought home the gold so he has far more leeway for the downside of the cycle at Clemson than he ever would at Bama. Dabo has more power than the boosters just as Saban does, but replacing Saban will be no easy feat and the Bama boosters will expect immediate and constant results. At Clemson he is now the legend. At Bama he will replace one and that will be the standard and it is very hard to hang at the top in the SEC making Saban’s run all the more impressive.

Bama will definitely try as I think Dabo is the best coach out there right now, but he will have many reasons to stay and they already pay him a fortune where he has the most capital imaginable.

I am a big Bama Fan. My view is Thank God for Dabo as the Tide should not have the title gifted to them, they need to earn it. With Dabo and Clemson Bama has to play their best or get stomped like the last game.

Roll Tide. Now for best 3 out of 5.

Why would Swinney want to go to Alabama with its ridiculously fervent fans? He's got a GREAT thing going at Clemson, and Clemson doesn't have to play in the SEC, either.

Statically Alabama dominated that title game last year. Dumbass mental mistakes cost them the game. Tua got raddled early on with the interceptions and the Tide just had a horrible defensive game. Games like this eat away at Saban. They’ll be right back in the title game this year. That is if they can beat Georgia, which will be no easy task. Clemson doesn’t have anyone in the ACC that can compete with them and once again they cakewalk to the BCS.
