The first glimpse of the upcoming limited series shows us Mirren as the legendary monarch, who was Empress of Russia from 1762 until 1796, making her the country's longest-ruling female leader. The series will show us Catherine toward the end of her rule in the 18th century, when she begins a steamy relationship with Grigory Potemkin (Jason Clarke), a military leader.
"When I was young I dreamed of freedom, I dreamed of breaking chains," Catherine can be heard saying in the trailer. "But as you get older, your choices narrow. So instead I gave us an empire, but I knew exactly what I was doing . . . I will not share my throne with anyone."
Watch the trailer for the four-part historical drama above before the series arrives on HBO this Fall.

Wasn’t Catherine the Great a bit on the Chubby side?...................

The question is. Did the seamy method of her death actually happen?
Later in life.
Helen Mirren is 73! How much more ‘later in life’ can she get?.............
NO.
The stallion story was *NEVER* true. It was just a slanderous canard that was made up by her enemies. Although, what WAS true was that she was legendary for using up men, and tossing them aside.
Nope. It was made up by the British. She was for them like Trump for Euros today.
When my wife and I saw “Calendar Girls” I thought, that Hellen lady must have been a hottie back in the day. I didn’t give it much thought until we saw her in Red. At that point I thought, she must have been acting when she was younger, so in a moment of boredom I checked IMDB.
That’s where I discovered the skinny on ‘Age of Consent”.
Who said the movie is historically correct?
Curious as to how they’ll portray the myth of the Potempkin villages.
Most ain’t....................
Another production with an anachronistic 21st century “powerful” woman with a loose libido in a tight bodice. Think R-rated Elizabeth 1998 for the geriatric generation —just say “no” to this bilge.
There’s an 80’s film “Young Catherine” on her life. Starred Julia Ormond. She was definitely not chubby.
Had some inaccuracies on her, but an enjoyable film.
This just makes me sad, thinking of Game of Thrones and how wrong it all went. Danaerys Targaryeon built her career on freeing slaves and taking power from the corrupt:
Daenerys of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regent of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons.
And then she burned about a million people to death for no good reason. That show had such promise.
Helen is getting some good roles at this stage of her career, unlike what usually happens to older women actresses.
Vanessa Redgrave and Meryl Streep are two others still in demand. Although, Vanessa tends to perform basically the same character in different stories and different costumes.
A male equivalent to that ‘same character’ habit is Samuel Jackson. His grand specialty is playing the gutter mouthed Ghetto Hood. It’s made him rich.
Screw HBO. They retroactively destroyed Game of Thrones 8 season of gripping drama and wonder in 3 episodes. I subscribed to HBO for 5 years after I discovered Game of Thrones and in the final season it was like they took a pet that they fed and loved and cared for and eviscerated it right in front of the people who loved it.
Queen Victoria was short, fat, and pop-eyed.
You mean not cute & perky like the Dr Who chick?
LOL. Nope. Albert wasn’t really a hottie, either.
