High levels of estrogen in the womb linked to autism

Scientist have identified a link between exposure to high levels of oestrogen sex hormones in the womb and the likelihood of developing autism.

The discovery adds further evidence to support the prenatal sex steroid theory of autism first proposed 20 years ago.

In 2015, a team of scientists at the University of Cambridge and the State Serum Institute in Denmark measured the levels of four prenatal steroid hormones, including two known as androgens, in the amniotic fluid in the womb and discovered that they were higher in male foetuses who later developed autism.

Today, the same scientists have built on their previous findings by testing the amniotic fluid samples from the same 98 individuals sampled from the Danish Biobank, which has collected amniotic samples from over 100,000 pregnancies, but this time looking at another set of prenatal sex steroid hormones called oestrogens. This is an important next step because some of the hormones previously studied are directly converted into oestrogens.

All four oestrogens were significantly elevated, on average, in the 98 foetuses who later developed autism, compared to the 177 foetuses who did not. High levels of prenatal oestrogens were even more predictive of likelihood of autism than were high levels of prenatal androgens (such as testosterone).

Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, who led this study and who first proposed the prenatal sex steroid theory of autism, said: "This new finding supports the idea that increased prenatal sex steroid hormones are one of the potential causes for the condition. Genetics is well established as another, and these hormones likely interact with genetic factors to affect the developing foetal brain."

Not sure how women can expect to tweak their hormones safely in ways that are sure to not negatively affect the baby, but this is interesting, none-the-less.

I’m guessing that it is environmentally related, in terms of stress. If so, than is controllable by removing stress during a pregnancy.

I thought I read that high levels also affect the chances of the kid being gay.

But dont quote me on that.

And it maybe is SO MANY factors when it comes to autism.

I fear it is not a one fix and you’re good kind of thing.

But stress NEVER helps and can very well harm.

Some people think hormonal birth control is linked to autism.

It is not as much of a problem if it is fermented, as in soy sauce.

would be interesting to see if women who give birth to autistic children who claim that vaccinations caused it, if the women took estrogen, or had high levels of it during their pregnancy-

I’ve been suspecting a contraceptive hormones and autism link, I’ve got nothing to prove it though.

I expect something similar is responsible for homosexuality and transgenderism.

I recall that being studied, as well. Imagine the caterwauling if they start searching for a “cure” for homosexuality. I’m sure that some would advocate for causing it.

As the prevalence of ASD has risen in the last sixty years, so has the prevalence of the usage of the oral contraceptives and other modern hormonal delivery methods.

The pill reduces testosterone in women. The total effect is a higher estrogen to testosterone ratio.

It can also kill her sex drive. The pill makers and doctors who do not mention this ought to be sued for all the sexless marriages and divorces they have contributed to.

For CAUSING IT!!!

They’re so sick that they would!!

Just like some other illnesses, being gay probably has multiple factors that lead to it.

But what do I know? :)

It’s about 2 percent of the population.

And out of about 100 Italian relatives, 2 are gay.

Funny, I had about 20 pretty good friends growing up into our teens and then adulthood and no one was gay.

I ALSO hung around with my cousin’s friends and ONE did turn out to be gay.

1 to 2 percent.

Only leftists dream of it being 10 percent.

Has there been any research on the use of ultra-sound on pregnant women? I have been wondering if that might contribute to autism.

Do phytoestrogens (e.g., soy) and xenoestrogens (e.g., plastic) count? They are less bioactive, but occupy receptor sites, and have risen dramatically in that time frame.
