Weekly Garden Thread - August 3-9, 2019
August 3, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 08/03/2019 5:55:02 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I can smell them from here! So lovely!

When I lived in southern CA, I used to frequent a farm called, ‘Summers Past Farm.’ In February, they would have a blooming MAZE of Sweet Peas to meander through.

So lovely! And they have only gotten better with age! Last time I was there was 1982!

Maybe this will inspire Mrs. Bender to design a maze of her own?

The Lady’s sweet peas are called Fraganzia (?) and I think she said they are a heirloom

“I have gobs of Concord grapes this year and if the tree rats don’t get them I’m going to be making a lot of grape jelly soon...”

As I was mowing past my grapes today, (all six of them) I saw a lot of Japanese Beetles eating the leaves and having some sort of orgy! Ick!

I planted seedless ‘Reliance’ and ‘Somerset’ grapes for eating and juicing two years ago and THIS is the THANKS I get, Mother Nature?

Tomorrow, they DIE!

“I want them dead! I want their whole family dead! I want their house burned to the ground! I want to go there in the middle of the night and p*ss on their ashes!” ~ Al Capone

(Paraphrased, because I’m pretty sure he wasn’t talking about Japanese Beetles...but he’s still spot on, LOL!)

I stand corrected.

I can’t believe it.

One of my tomatoes is showing hints of yellow orange.

Yippee!

I feel that way about snails and slugs.

Shout out to tubebender for the tip on Deadline.

I had to keep the cat inside for almost a month but I can’t remember when I last saw a snail or slug- alive at least...

Sunset magazine made up their own ‘zones’ a long time; it was quite confusing, because some of their gardening books were the first I had ever read.

I seem to remember owning one of their crochet books, too. Turns out I was knitting, LOL!

I have a few “Early Doll” tomato plants. This variety is a cousin of the very popular and very successful “Early Girl” variety that does well in the Pacific Northwest area.

I have a branch that has 6 tomatoes all directly next to eachother and ripening, 2 bright red and perfectly round (as the variety should be, 2 round and still green, and 2 that are orange fleshed with almost a pepper shape.

I have never seen this before...different colors yes, but not the oddball shape with angles to them.

If they taste ok I am going to harvest the seeds and see what they produce next year.

I am, annually, in a death struggle with wild blackberry bushes in and around my backyard garden.

I have to keep plucking them out with the shovel which never gets all the roots out and they come back.

I stumbled into the Imperial Cruiser root yesterday. The thing was bigger around than my forearm.

Felt good to get a big win even though I know next week I will be back out there with the shovel pulling out another garbage can worth of new starts.

We have the wild and aggressive growing Himalaya blackberry. One of Luther Burbank’s experiments that he regretted. The fruit is large and so is the seed inside. I’ll post a photo of a patch in my neighbor’s yard...

We make zucchini bread. It’s more like a dessert, but I don’t mind! Not sure if this is the recipe, but close enough. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/6698/moms-zucchini-bread/

We have to grow our tomatoes in a greenhouse here on Humboldt Bay in northwestern Calif. We are growing 3 tubs of Celebrity & 3 tubs of Defiant as they are "Blight Resident"

Meaning "Blight Resistant," and the lack of wind can foster blight i think.

Meanwhile, here in Eastern MA I am amazed at how many tomatoes my Christian brother in Christ and neighbor from Guatemala is getting from his potted tomato plants!

Glory to God. He just gave them water (often), with some Miracle-gro sometimes. Some of these were planted as about 5'' tall in late April and really struggled with the 40 degree weather. Ours are growing well - taller than last year at this time - but hardly are producing as many toms yet. but thank God for them also. Should our sol tested, but it is hardly uniform.
