BROOKLINE, MA Talia Glass admits she was apprehensive about hitting the off switch on the public wireless service in Allium Market and Café. The Coolidge Corner shop's owner said she wants to make as many of her customers happy as possible, and that there were sleepless nights and much anxiety in advance of Friday's termination of the Wi-Fi that had turned her friendly boutique restaurant into tables full of computer screens and silence.

Because phones don’t have hot spots?
Because unlimited data can be expensive.
Do not blame her at all.
Also to get folks to talk.
My phone has tethering - could care less about having access to unsecured wifi, at least in the US.
how many people who use public wifi use a paid vpn service?
No WiFi!
Talk
Laugh
Party like its 1970!
and it tickles
It amazes me when I see couples who are dining out stare at their phones the entire time.
That is not a marriage or relationship I would want to be in.
> Because unlimited data can be expensive
And if the “customers” are too broke to have a data plan, they’re too broke to spend on a good meal.
They may need to have use of public restrooms...
"Visit our cafe to experience the relaxing sanity of the BP (Before Phone) era!"
Also to get folks to talk.
The same for restaurants with TVs blasting away.
Also, a relative that believes a TV or two is required for proper digestion even for family events.
My unlimited data plan isn’t that expensive, or at least it’s worth the cost. But I’d put the phone or iPad away in a nice restaurant!
I already have two DSL lines that provide “unlimited data” [at a low data rate; one each at two compounds where we spend most of our time.]
Our wireless “plan” has a fixed monthly [shared among 4 devices] data limit that is higher than any currently available plan below “unlimited”.
Wireless Data should be getting cheaper each year [sorta a Moore’s Law thing], but it is NOT.
I tend to stay away from wireless data as it is so much cheaper at home. [or at free wifi spots].
5G will NOT be an improvement in cost effectiveness much less provide better coverage away from ‘Rat Urban Utopias.
Two of my pet peeves: music in public places such as supermarkets and TVs blaring in restaurants.
"It was also costing potential customers in the cozy, 19-seat space as students and remote workers turned a $3 cup of coffee into a three-hour stay".
With customer no longer as likely to take up seats in the cafe the turnover is higher, and with that comes more revenue and profits.
But profits aren't something progressive Brookline residents like to talk about, even though they and their wealthy neighbors living in multi-million dollar houses certainly earn a lot of money somehow. So we've got the story.
Bingo! You nailed it.
In a way, I support her, however, when I first got into business, I use Panera to meet customers and it helped me. Seeing couples at a table staring at their computers instead of talking is troublesome, but then it helps kids behave better with a tablet...
