BBC ^ | 17 Sept 2019

A woman who was treated for breast cancer a year ago has become the first person to swim across the English Channel four times non-stop.

Ms Thomas, from Colorado in the United States,

Sarah Thomas, 37, began the epic challenge in the early hours of Sunday and finished after more than 54 hours.

Swimmer Lewis Pugh said in a tweet: "Just when we think we've reached the limit of human endurance, someone shatters the records."

Author and broadcaster Charlie Connelly has described her achievement as "one of the greatest feats of mental and physical endurance in human history", while official observer Kevin Murphy said she had "tested the limits of endurance".

She also abided by the Channel Swimming and Piloting Federation rules when completing the crossing - so was only permitted to wear a cap, goggles, and a swimsuit.

But can she jump across the English Channel, like Ron Obvious?

This show the way each crossing was affected by the tide in the English channel.

All crossings end up being a rather curved route

So she swam halfway, then changed her mind and went back, *four times*?

” I guess some people are just driven to the extremes.”

I personally know this cameraman here in L.A. who worked on some of the most dangerous animals on the planet that you see on Natl Geo and Animal Planet, and on Youtube. Ever remember those scenes where you film the anaconda and boa while they slither up stream and you see their heads up-close? Even eating another animal in slo-mo? That’s the dude I know. He’s even credited on a few episodes of Shark Week. If it’s not “semi dangerous”, he turns them down..

I’ve heard of hyper-runners who run 2 or 3 marathons back to back. They finish with one and keep running for number 2.

It’s amazing, definitely. Did she leave the water at any time? I would think she would have to stop here and there, just to take a break and keep her skin from feeling the full effect of that salt water. I suppose the water ‘simply absorbed and dispersed’ any of her waste products.

If this was an American women, I’ll bet she would have found a few businesses to sponsor, publicize and film her adventure.
She would have a couple of product endorsement offers too.

Once when I was much younger and more vital than I am today, I swam a mile. I was younger then so recovered within a day or so.

The English Channel is 21 miles across at the narrowest point. That would mean back when I went to school (Who knows what it means today?) she swam 84 miles, minimum.

This is a woman I would like to meet.

An American women!

YES!!!

As of 2017 she worked as a recruiter for a health care company. She is married to Ryan Willis. She lives in Conifer, Colorado.

On 4-6 October 2016, she completed a 80-mile (128.7 km) crossing of Lake Powell along the Utah-Arizona border from Bullfrog to Wahweap in 56 hours 5 minutes 26 seconds at the age of 34.

Thomas completed a 104.6 mile (168.3 km) solo open water swim in Lake Champlain where she started on 7 August 2017 in island loop route at Rouses Point, New York, proceeded south and around Gardiner Island near Charlotte, Vermont, and returned to the start in 67 hours 16 minutes 12 seconds on 9 August 2017.

I’m getting tired of these ostentatious displays of endurance or strength or whatever. I’m glad she beat cancer, but why couldn’t she just leave it at that? Be a spokesperson, whatever, but what is really the point of this swim? It’s a waste of time and money, a stunt.

You got it. I was trying not to come out and say it, but yes.
What’s the point of all that enormous effort?
For some, the journey to the goal is it’s own reward.
Maybe she’s one of those altruistic people.
