‘Rambo’ author David Morrell ashamed to be associated with Sylvester Stallone movie ‘Last Blood’

The novelist behind the “Rambo” series is waging war — against his own creation.

Author David Morrell, who breathed life into Vietnam War vet and one-man wrecking crew John Rambo in his 1972 novel “First Blood,” is the latest critic to badmouth Sylvester Stallone’s newest film.

“I agree with these ‘Rambo: Last Blood’ reviews. This film is a mess, tweeted Morrell on Friday. “Embarrassed to have my name associated with it.”

Morrell stated he had initially been involved in the creation of “Last Blood,” which was to show a more impassioned Rambo; instead, Matthew Cirulnick completed the gory screenplay.

“I felt degraded and dehumanized after I left the theater,” the 76-year-old, Canadian-born writer told Newsweek. “Instead of being soulful, this new movie lacks one. I felt I was less a human being for having seen it, and today that’s an unfortunate message.” …

Morrell perhaps should head back to Canada?

I haven’t seen it yet but given the track record of previous Rambo sequels, it’s probably not going to be that great even though it’s making the critics mad that the Cartels are depicted rightfully as vicious killers. Rocky was another series that they kept making unnecessary mediocre sequels in my opinion.

To be honest I didn’t like the movie. A collection of cliches from all around the franchise. Easily the worst of all Rambo movies.

Well, good for you for seeing it, since it’s triggering the left-wing critics.

Rocky is a good comparison. Same thing.

The movie, Last Blood, showed Mexico as a place of lawlessness, crime, drugs, and human trafficking with the Mexicans fully armed with automatic weapons and lacking any moral code. I guess truth upsets liberals, Mexicans, and the author David Morrell.

I’m still waiting for Pongo’s review of Rocky 5,000 myself.

Maybe off topic, but has any actor made more sequels than Sylvester Stallone? Between Rocky and Rambo, that’s a bunch.

Has Morrell even written a book in the last 15 years?? (I see that he has with a quick look at wikipedia)... But I haven't seen anything by him at the bookstores.

I used to be a fan of some of his stuff (never much liked the Rambo stuff though)... But I guess he hasn't written anything good enough to make it to the local book shelves for quite a while.

I have to admit that the portrayal of Mexico and Mexicans was awful, near on par with Mordor and Orcs in the Lord of Ring but that’s probably for a sake of realism.

The reality of the cartels is probably worse.

Rocky was another series that they kept making unnecessary mediocre sequels in my opinion.

The same goes for Star Wars. I saw the original Star Wars in 1977--watched it five times--and then the first two sequels, Star Wars II (1980) and Star Wars III (1983) and the first antecedent, Star Wars IV (1996), but none of these measured up to Star Wars I. I haven't seen any of the subsequent Star Wars films.

I’m guessing taking any $$ associated with Last Blood is ok though.

Start by giving back all the monetary compensation he got for selling the rights (and any input) to Rambo and then he can lecture people.

I read the First Blood book back in the ‘70s. If memory serves me...both Rambo and the sheriff died at the end...maybe blown up by dynamite.

That being said, I’m glad Rambo was resurrected, at least for some of the sequels. The previous movie (4th?), gory also, should’ve been the end of the series. The end of the movie pictured Rambo returning to his homeplace farm in America...walking down the long drive to the house. You just assumed it was the homeplace because of the “Rambo” name on the mailbox. The ending scene left you feeling like Rambo was finally home.

That being said...heck yeah I’m watching “Last Blood”.

Critics have excoriated the film, which presently has a 29% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The fan score is 86%.

Looks like the people who pay money to see movies are enjoying it.

FWIW, I'm surprised the critic score isn't a 0%. The critics who praised the film will likely never work again.

Hey David, do you know how to use the 3 seashells?

Yes, that's a mixed metaphor, or something.

If y'all want to see the worst, but funniest movie Stallone ever did, look up 'Rhinestone'. Dolly Parton takes a bet to turn a cab driver (Stallone) in to a country music star. Hilarious!
