Police arrested a man last week after he allegedly drove a stolen construction excavator into a light pole and caused extensive damage while driving through two gas stations just off Interstate 5 in Redding.

Remore Allen Smith, 37, of North Carolina faces charges of vehicle theft, resisting arrest and hit-and-run after authorities say he stole the heavy machinery from an I-5 on-ramp at about 3:15 a.m. Friday.

Smith allegedly drove the excavator several hundred feet on Churn Creek Road, striking a light pole and traveling through a Chevron gas station and then an Arco AM/PM station, the Redding Police Department said in a news release. Smith allegedly drove the excavator into an overhang at the Arco station, causing “extensive damage,” the news release said.

This will sound strange, but I hope he was intoxicated. Doing crap like this sober means he’s a real nut.

I'm guessing that he picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.

I’ve never left the keys in my outdoor equipment either but sadly the master key can be purchased at the dealer.
They tried to steal my backhoe once, thankfully my battery was dead. It would be easy for them to park a flatbed down the block, steal it and away they go.
I live in the country on a coldisack street off of a road not much traveled especially after midnight. Here in Texas with the AC on and all the windows shut not one of my neighbors would here a thing, literally.

Well he ain’t Mayhem, I seen that guy in a tv commercial. I’m convinced he’s a drunk lunatic. I’ve operated several pieces of heavy equipment. You are absolutely correct in how much damage a machine could do. What amazes me is the fact he didn’t blowup one of the stations and fry in the machine.

I needed to use a backhoe once. Was one conveniently parked nearby. If its a diesel, you don’t necessarily need a key. Hot-wired it and did what needed done (bury dead dog) and returned it.

First thing i do is change the ignition switch, most equipment like this uses nothing more than a flat blade with maybe one dimple, you basically can use any similar sized piece of metal like a screwdriver blade. Both of my Hysters were like that.

I would imagine he ran into the building or just hit the overhang
I’m sure if he ran over a gas pump he’d have fried instantly

Fun fact: 1 key from each manufacturer fits most of their machines. The door keys are different, but the ignition keys are universal. Also the ignition locks are very low security, most can be easily picked with a small pen knife.

“Both of my Hysters were like that.”

If you drive it into a building do you need a Hyster-ectomy?
