I arrived here in China yesterday and after checking into my hotel I decided to take a look at the news and of course free republic is the first place I go. It is now blocked here, I come here often (747 CPT) And have never had an issue before. Looks like you guys of all been on your worst behavior and highlighted yourself somehow! I’d consider it a badge of honor, thank God for VPNs!

I thought the same thing about the VPN. I work at a place where vpn is blocked through the company wifi. I am sure it is only a matter of time before the communist ban and block all vpns.

They’ve already been banned. Recently I read about a Chinese person being criminally charged over using one. Whether they can be blocked is always going to be a struggle between government sensors and those who want to access the forbidden fruit
That’s why I have VPN, and access to my cloud aka Locker. When I head to SE Asia, or even idiotic Canada, they look at my laptop.

As far as photos are concerned all I got were shots of a calm,peaceful square with Mao smiling down benevolently at the people.Absolutely none of the photos of tanks and bloody students you get on "dot com".

The VPN that I have on my iPad does not work. It used to but they somehow cracked the code and blocked that one. Now I use a device called a pokefi and you can buy time/memory that has a Chinese VPN built into it. It’s basically a personal Wi-Fi device that connects to cellular.
That is when you need a VPN. I am not sure if it would work in China...but I can never really see a reason to go there in the first place. At least not at this point. China Town in Boston is risky enough for me.
