Who among us gets to do the subduing and overcoming? In his novel That Hideous Strength,
Lewis imagines an answer: the National Institute for Coordinated Experiments, or N.I.C.E.Walter Hooper reports (on Socrates in the City) that while Lewis thought his best book was Perelandra, his favorite was That Hideous Strength.

I remember literally quivering with anticipation as I opened That Hideous Strength for the first time in high school. It remained my favorite book for years.
