I love these SHTF threads, it offers an opportunity to compare notes with the choices others have made.
I can check off everything on your list except that I opted to purchase an S&W .357 wheel gun (my entry into firearms ownership). Decades later it’s still my favorite of the bunch.
Now if I could just get my hands on a phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range...
And if you don't think like he does, one might question your manhood:
"Be forewarned: This is a mans weapon."
(Mike might be a little insecure)
The author lost me at “going out on your front porch”.
If you present yourself as an easy target and draw fire to your own house, which three guns you are holding will not matter for very long.
What would you suggest for a 150 lb 50ish woman on a modest budget?
For a handgun find a good quality USED .357 magnum revolver from a reputable manufacturer with a 4-6 barrel. Do NOT start out with .357 ammunition. Begin with .38 Special. When and IF youre comfortable moving up then go to the higher powered cartridge. If you dont get there no worries. Quality .38 Special self defense ammunition will do the job.
For a shotgun look at a USED Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 in 20, NOT 12 gauge. Our personal preference is for Mossberg but either one will serve you quite well and most likely for the rest of your life. Between the two models something over 20,000,000 or so have been made.
For a rifle (heres where people are going to jump on me. I dont care. Neither should you). Find a Ruger 10-22, used if possible. I saw one last week at Cabelas for $189 in fine condition. But even brand new theyre around $350 or so if you shop around. $50-60 dollars will get you 1,000 rounds of ammunition so you can practice, practice, and practice some more.
That rifle has almost zero recoil, ammunition is back in quantity, its easy to maintain, and they last a lifetime or two. Mrs L can put 10 rounds inside a silver dollar at 75 yards with hers. People will tell you its under powered and unsuitable for defense purposes. Thats crap. If you can put 3 rounds into an eye socket at 50 feet you WILL stop Mr Bad Guy.
Id rather you had a smaller caliber rifle that youre confident using AND that youve had plenty of practice with than some $1,000 AR you havent put 2,000-3,000 rounds through. Does that make sense to you?
Good luck.

“What would you suggest for a 150 lb 50ish woman on a modest budget?”
For the least expensive: A 38 caliber revolver. ($300)
For semi-automatic: A Walther CCP in 9mm. ($450)
See post 64.
Best,
L
I have a Maverick 88, $200 out the door, best bang for the buck Ive seen.
I used to hunt deer with a WWII rifle as a teenager. A MANs rifle gets pretty damn heavy when you have to tote it around the mountainside all day. While I HAVE rifles that will shoot over 600 yards there are very few occasions IMHO when you are ever going to HAVE to do that.
Perfectly sound advise for the intended user.
Yep. Looks stylish, though. You can buy a couple of AR 15s and spare parts for the price of an M1A.
And it makes sense to me too. :)
Absolutely terrifying, but an excellent, excellent book.
He, of course, wouldn't go out on his porch using a rifle first.
With your rifle, walk out on your balcony.
On my porch Mossberg 500 tactical shotgun, Bulgarian AK74, Ruger P89.

Be still my beating heart....

Gotta keep repeating myself. Try lugging 1000 rounds of centerfire ammo in a backpack. Then try lugging 1000 rounds of .22LR in a backpack. Now imagine having to walk 3 miles in a hurry with that backpack.
If you are looking for a centerfire rifle, the Ruger American line is very affordable and comes in lots of calibers. Check out 6.5 Creedmoor as an option. Great ballistics and very modest recoil, and it’s popular enough now so ammo is widely available.
Or - a shotgun with 18” barrel with 7-shot magazine(s)
A 9mm with 17 round magazine(s), and a 40 cal with 15 round Magazine(s) and any decent hunting-adequate rifle as long as one is familiar and capable with them all......and don’t forget the ear and eye protection so you don’t disable yourself during a fray.
I bet he drives a big ol' huge pickup truck that has never been off the pavement.
