Italy has 60 million people, about 1/5th of our population.

We have about 200,000 people on an average year who get hospitalized with the flu, although I’ve read on some years it gets as high as 600,000. Assume at any one point, we have about 20,000 people being treated for the flu.

Italy should have been ready to handle 4,000 people with pnemonia at any one time, if they had the same level of care as we do, just to handle possible flu cases. Although we have a LOT more beds than 20,000. (I think we have 90,000 or so). If Italy is like us, then they should have 16,000 ICU beds.

Italy currently has 10,500 active cases, of which only 1028 are listed as “critical”. If you assume that half the non-critical cases are still requiring ICU, that’s about 6000 ICU beds they need, and they should have 16,000, so if they don’t have 10,000 flu cases being treated, they should have had enough space for this.

Of course, probably not in the one specific are being impacted. And I’m not sure if they are transporting cases to other hospitals. Hopefully they are setting up emergency hospitals.

Unfortunately, they are getting zero help from their EU “partners”. In our country, the states will help each other out, so long as the infection is hitting specific states, and not spread out to the entire population.

Note to whomever created that graphic: Some common colds are caused by coronaviruses as well.

But that was left off for some reason.

Hmmmm...

“Then who is to say that the Coronavirus hasn’t been around for much longer than recently”
```
the meme of the day: the-who-is-to-say minimization of a real serious and very deadly contagion - “See mom, it just the flu”.
So this is the reason China has quarantined 80,000,000 people and trashed over 5% of their economy, and brought in 40 industrial furnaces to burn bodies after the 49 crematoriums broke down running 24/7? Since its “just the flu,” this must be what the Chinese do every year, eh? Nothing to worry about. Hey! Whose it going to be Bernie or Biden? Is it going to snow tomorrow? Where are you going on your nest vacation? and so on ...
If you get the china flu are you hungry again in an hour?
Not if you add some lard to your diet.
brought in 40 industrial furnaces to burn bodies after the 49 crematoriums broke down running 24/7?
And just who is reporting that? Do you actually believe that the death toll being reported in China is so bad that a news outlet would actually post that figure?
That ranks right up there with a video of an Iranian woman clad in her burqua being flogged while on her knees........Unfortunately, the video never mentions that it is quite apparent that she has padding on her back and shoulders that protects her from the whip...........
Yea, if it's on the internet, it must be true.........LOL!
"The constant, unending barrage of COVID stories"
That is how big stories are covered. It is a big story.
Yeah... It’s become tabloid fodder. Sensationalism, hysterics and panic for the herd.
Media always sucks at big stories. But that’s not really what this is about. The virus is what it is. It’s a big deal. That’s not a media invention.
I worked in hospitals for years. Trust me, their ICU beds were gone on day 2.
Do you think any of those 10,000 beds were filled? Or did they move everyone out to make room for these guys?
As Joe Biden says, “Come on man....think”
This stuff is happening while the rest of the hospitals business goes on. You guys think this is happening in a vacuum. Babies are born. Heart stents are put in. Kidneys are transplanted. Stuff cannot wait.
Do you think they have EXTRA rooms for that stuff?]
How do you see US hospitals coping with an Italy-style mortality rate, adjusted for the US population? If the president fed a bunch of money into the system, could he get makeshift ICU’s up and going before we have to resort to the kinds of triage to which the Italians have been forced, where hospitals are basically hospices for patients falling outside certain parameters?
I think the hospital system in the US would roll over just as fast.
Yes a ton of money has been injected. And what will they do with it? Go out an buy new equipment for ICU facilities?
Again, think this through. What are they going to buy? And from where?
Do you think there is a factory in the US pumping out hospital beds, vents, telemetry systems, and dialysis machines?
Do you think they will magically come up with staff to build out, furnish, and then come up with doctors and especially nurses?
Why do you think money is going to solve this?
Finally...if a similar situation happens in the US how long do you think the hourly staffs at any hospital are going to stick around? Do you think the $12 an hour transport person is going to see bodies stacked up in the morgue and think “his” life and his family’s life is worth THAT?
They will hit the road so fast your head will spin. Clerical staff, phlebotomists, transport folks, the technicians who fix the equipment, and even the cafeteria people will simply fade into the woodwork.
Think of an army without any privates or corporals. Except you cannot shoot them for desertion.
Yes Mr Tabasco its true - some of us have contacts in China. As well there was early reporting (late Dec-early Jan) which you must have missed that furnaces were brought in. The death toll in China is likely surpassing 200,000. Chinese medicine is not western medicine. Of course you missed the essential point to jump on death totals - the real point is overloaded medical resources - in China there is a casual attitude toward personal health and the medical facilities reflect that attitude.
Like in Italy, the hospitals are overwhelmed because there are not enough ICUs. Most Hospitals ICUs are at or near capacity in ordinary times, COVID19 pushes medical people and resources beyond what they can cope with so more people die. The US will fare no better in this regard.
Any number which comes out of China about anything is suspect. The media can only report what the CCP releases. Back months ago, a Chinese official in a Chinese news conference admitted that the numbers released are a matter of political and national security. China is not the West. Did you miss Tiananmen Square in ‘89? There are still video up in case you want to understand better how things are done in China.
Be careful about what you say - have you see the pro basketball player who mocked COVID19 at a news event going so far as to touch each microphone showing his contempt? He now has tested positive ...
COVID19 is not the flu, unless nature is good at gene splicing ...
I AM in the medical system, working as a nurse in a nursing home. All Faucci had to say is that the Corona virus fatality rate may be as high as 1 percent. I still say that the panic is worse than the disease. Everyone should stay calm and sober, but it’s not gonna happen.
If you work in a nursing home, you know it would be higher than 1% for your patients.
That said, talking about it is not panic. Its talk.
Reading about it is not panic. Its information.
Ignoring it is stupid—and that is what a lot of the flu-bros on FR are suggesting we do.
The biggest problem is that Americans are stupid, and they do not understand how to read for context. They read a headline and they jump to conclusions. They hear something that conforms to their “paradigm” and that something is “gospel” to them—to the elimination of any other outcome.
I’ve seen nursing home staff go nuts over bed bugs and c-dif. But those are things you are “rated” on. I’ve also read that the nursing home staff in Kirkland were sharing O2 and nebulizer treatment equipment. I’ve seen with my own eyes, the 02 “BUBBLERS” be kept in a locked safe because staff was stealing them to smoke pot through.
So, I am not sure what you think is calm and sober...If people knew the shit that went on in nursing homes...they would freak out.
I see very little on FR that induces “panic.” But panic is an internal reaction. Very little in my life induces much of a “reaction” these days. Except the complaints about other’s actions.
You are right, we are never going to control that. But, if you don’t want to see articles—I would suggest you stay off the internet and social media for a while. Then you can be surprised, like everyone else.
Cause...its just the flu.
Look, the flu is horrifying for an older person with pathologies. It IS a crisis! VL, I don’t see a lot of sober assessment from any Democrat right now.
H1N1 in 2009 was a crisis too, we got through that, and the stock market went back up and life returned to normal.
This too shall pass.
Honestly, I don’t see much productive coming out of either side.
Yes, the Democrats “usually” make my stomach turn...so there is little changed there.
But there are members of Congress that hide out in the corners. When they come into the light, you have to wonder what the hell is going on in their district if this is the “best” they have.
We are in an emergency and there are a handful that I would trust with my life.
No prominent person ever blamed Obama’s pathetic response to H1N1 for the exacerbation of deaths (over 12,000) in America.
Republicans are cowards, in general; Democrats are totalitarian monsters.
I listen to Rush for perspective, which he gave today. May he be around for another 10-15 years!!
