Now is the time for ESPN, NFL, NBA and more to air the classic games we love

As essentially everyone in the world is being asked to stay indoors and away from others during the coronavirus pandemic, we no longer have the one thing that could reliably bring us together and keep us from vacating our couches: live sports. Nearly every active sports league has suspended games, including the NCAA’s marquee, March Madness.

Instead of spending this week pretending to be busy at work while secretly watching college basketball games at our desks and checking our brackets on our smartphones during meetings, many of us are stuck indoors with our pets, roommates, partners, and children — and there are no live sports to escape to. With normalcy gone in every corner of our lives, it’s even harder for us to do what we absolutely need to do: stay indoors and distance ourselves from people outside our households.

Those leagues should open up their library of past games on their websites for free. Keep the base happy.

“The Giants win the pennant”. Bill Buckner. Immaculate Reception. Ice Bowl. Helmet catch. Mr. October.

I’d bet there are millions (esp. young uns) who’ve never seen those games.

Great way to watch them - archive footage so you can dvr through the commercials.

If the media really cared, they’d offer it all up for free :)

"Game 6: Mets v. Red Sox 1986"

ARE YOU CRAZY? I've been trying to burn every copy of that game I can lay my hands on....

Seriously - how about 1968 NCAA basketball between UCLA and Houston? Alcindor - Hayes, man what a match up!

The Ice Bowl, December 31, 1967.

If that is all they aired. ESPN is garbage, a bunch a liberal jackwagons, that half the time don’t know squat about sports.

I’m a hockey fan. I would put two games at the top of my list:

1. The “Miracle on Ice” game from the 1980 Winter Olympics — the most iconic moment in the history of U.S. sports

2. Game 2 of the 1987 Canada Cup finals between Canada and the USSR — arguably the greatest hockey game ever played. Interestingly, Games 1 and 3 of that best-of-three finals would also probably make the list of Top Ten Hockey Games of All Time.

The ‘flu’ game (5th game of the 1997 NBA finals, Bulls vs. Jazz), in which Michael Jordan played with the flu, scored 38 points and the game winner, then collapsed into Scottie Pippen’s arms. Seems appropriate considering what we're going through.

Just the other night, NHL network re-broadcast Game 6 of the the 1975 Cup Finals between Buffalo and the winners, the Broad Street Bullies. It wasn’t a slugfest but it was great seeing the French Connection and Clark, Schultz and The Hound’s stuffer that won it. One of the little DoodleBobs was amazed at Parent in goal, but was also a little perplexed: “how do you know the score or what time it is?”

Now is the time for all of them to get the hell back to work and treat any player who is sick like a player who is sick.

I’m not a yuge basketball fan, but I consider Jordan in that game to be one of the greatest human sporting displays ever.

Giants vs. Bills Super Bowl. Whitney Houston National Anthem. 11 minute drive to open the second half. Giant defense (Bill Bellichek) using a 2 man rush against Jim Kelly. Last minute drive by the Bills with Thurman Thomas running all over the Giants. Wide right.

Immaculate Reception? Seeing that again would kill me quicker than the coronavirus. I nearly get physically ill every time I see that clip. Had instant replay been around, the referees would still be reviewing it...lol.

I’ll have to watch that one. And it IS different to see those old games without the added visuals on the screen.

Now is the time for ESPN and other content providers (MSG, NESN, Spectrum, SEC network, etc.) waive/suspend fees to cable providers for content that won’t be shown and these same cable providers pass on those waived/reduced fees to their customers. I’m sure any network or cable company executive will have a good laugh or heart attack at the thought of this.

Yesterday I watched the 1986 4th round of Masters when Jack Nicklaus won his 6th Masters Title at age 46...shooting 30 on the back nine....the went Eagle, Birdie, Birdie on 15,16,17 and Greg Norman choked on 18 and hit his approach shot into the crowd...
