Coronavirus patients are dying to stay alive.
Thats what happened when one man, worried about becoming infected with COVID-19, decided to self-medicate with aquarium cleaner containing chloroquine phosphate.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chloroquine phosphate, or simply chloroquine, along with its analog hydrochloroquine (brand name Plaquenil), are anti-parasite, anti-inflammatory drugs used to prevent or treat parasitic infections, namely malaria, as well as autoimmune disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
The powerful additive is also commonly found in fish tank cleaner, according to Arizonas Banner Health hospital, where the man was treated before his untimely death.
Despite President Trumps earnest recommendation of the drug which has proven to be an effective treatment for some in press conferences and on Twitter, medical experts are urging consumers and coronavirus patients to consult a doctor before taking chloroquine phosphate (also called Aralen) as it could cause serious complications and death in patients with certain pre-existing ailments. Fatal overdoses have also been recently documented in Nigeria.
@WHO has NOT approved the use of chloroquine for #COVID19 management, tweeted the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. Scientists are working hard to confirm the safety of several drugs for this disease. Please DO NOT engage in self-medication. This will cause harm and can lead to death.
"The combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin to treat the coronavirus has not been proven safe and effective through large scale clinical trials, wrote Dr. Eugene Gu to his nearly 400,000 followers on Twitter. Promising them as miracle drugs gives false hope.
Anecdotal evidence has suggested a combination of hydrochloroquine and the antibiotic azithromycin (also known as Z-Pak) may have potential for benefit in patients who are hospitalized with coronavirus, says Dr. James DiNicolantonio, a cardiovascular research scientist and doctor of pharmacy based in Kansas City, Missouri.

You have to be responsible about the dosage with Plaquenil. I have a friend whose relative went blind because she had lost weight and her dosage didn’t take that into account.
I thought Eugene Gu wasnt a real doctor anymore.
Oh goody a woke writer telling us something
Congratulations.
You have successfully described every prescription drug.
All the ones it has not worked for would be dead I believe.
Our intellectual culture too often hates innocent human life.
Where is this phosphate ever listed as the equivalent as the medical forms that were listed by President Trump?
These journalists and commentators are the ones trying to poison people by encouraging copy cats of the same outrageous behavior.
Perhaps more importantly they are casting shade on one of the best and relatively cheapest prospects for saving life in cases of COVID.
By increasing “caution” less of this drug will be prescribed and more people will die.
Let’s say it: That is what they [the Trump reactionaries] want. They want as many innocent people dead from the disease and then blame this on the President.
This drug must be proven to be ineffective and in fact dangerous so that Trump can be wrong.
This reactionary ethic is killing America.
I am fascinated at how this same reactionary intellectual culture pitched a fit when it was suggested that people should abstain from sex and especially certain forms of sex to prevent HIV spread. That is impossible and unreasonable then but know 18 months of total isolation is perfectly reasonable.
“NO” if you are a Democrat.
“YES” if you are a Republican
In the meantime physician are prescribing this to themselves and their families.
RE: NO if you are a Democrat. YES if you are a Republican

Not a satisfactory OBJECTIVE answer.
It would be like saying The World is round if you belong to this party , but it is flat if you belong to the other party.
One has to be right and the other wrong. OBJECTIVELY.
RE: Waiting for the statistics of:
Death without hydroxycholoroquine/azithromycin treatment: XXX
Death AFTER hydroxycholorquine/azithromycin treatment: YYY

That’s the Double blind study that the FDA demands before it approves it officially for treatment of Covid-19.
In the meantime, all studies and tests already made by doctors here and abroad (including Dr. Vladimir Zelenko of Monroe NY, who successfully treated hundreds of patients with this Hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin combo) are considered “anecdotal”. by the powers that be.
True enough, but if I was desperate enough I’d gamble on the drug anyway. If I’m dying anyway chances of eve small success will be wirth it.
I’m gonna say, again, “let the doctors figure this stuff out.” Do not be your own pharmacist.
My wife took plaquenil for a lupus diagnosis she received. Turns out the diagnosis was wrong so she stopped taking it, but there are side effects, potentially serious ones.
Is that something to do with Ayn Rand?
Very true, niece is on it for Lupus, it’s OFF label.

I’m on my third Type 2 Diabetic med, first 2 where horrible. Januvia one of the newer ones broke me out in Bad Hives, which meant a round of Predisone. Predisone runs your Sugar up. It also is NOT to be given to Glaucoma patients, it can cause blindness, that goes for all steroids, cortisone, and Anti Inflammatories like Mobic, Toradol and the OTC non Tylenol meds.
And most doctors are ignorant of those facts. 1 ten mg Predisone will raise eye pressure from 12 to 23+ over night.
There is a Dr. Jason Fung who runs a clinic in Toronto has done research about fasting, intensive dietary management, and diabetes. He has three books including, The Diabetes Code. Many patients can go off medication completely.
Of course, you have to work with your doctor, since your medication may have to be reduced ans eliminated.
I remember one woman, who was taking a lot of insulin, fast seven days, and didn't need medication after that.
