We had a Dachshund who could sniff out a bag of beef jerky before it was even opened, so I guess it’s possible......

Nestlé Purina Petcare is providing seed money to Dogs4Diabetics (D4D), in Concord, Calif., for a proof-of-concept experiment that could be completed in a month.

And no dog comes close to the ability of a bear.
I read once that a plane followed a polar bear 40 miles to see why it was running.
Turns out a female bear in heat.

Ill put a Labrador Retriever right up there.
But, Im biased.

A polar bear can smell a seal that's three feet under the ice...from a mile away.

And they're as loyal and defending as the best of them, I can testify. Anyone who never owned a Scheisshund but are thinking of getting a dog (or getting an addition to the current dogpile) should read up on them and decide if one would fit into their lives. Wonderful breed. Need attention and best kept indoors when they're an adult and you're not at home. Trust me. They eat a lot of shoes when they're left to their own devices. *chuckle* We had three (a male, his sister, and a step-sister), and the male would eat the backs out of my wife's shoes or take one outside and hide it as a way (in his doggy logic) to keep her from leaving the house so we'd stay home with them. Shoes go on feet, feet take human out the door to work, so no shoes, feet keep human at home. Amazing how they suss that out on their own. (And people say dogs are stupid. I beg to differ.) I learned his trick early on and kept all my shoes on a shoe tree in the bedroom closet. LOL

This is another “scientific scam” to use some of the 2 TRILLION dollars for “research” that should have been knocked off by some oversight outfit and canceled.
HOw long is the proposed ‘study”? Did the proposal include the probability that it would be impossible to train enough pooches to use that capability to inform the community that comprises 300+ million people?
How much are scientists willing to pillage at the trough during this pandemic for their own gain>

But the proof of concept will not use dogs. They will use rats according to the article. Then, if the rats work, they will have to shift to dogs—or perhaps beavers as an intermediate step before dogs.
I appreciate the money Purina is funding. but they may have been scammed by another “research group”.
