Special Dispatch to the New-York Times.

CHARLESTON, Thursday, April 26.

The principal doings of the delegates, thus far, have been fighting with the policemen at the door for the admission of themselves and friends, the taking of their seats, and an almost immediate adjournment. Aside from the decisions in the contested cases, nothing of importance has been done. This is the fourth day of the Convention, and upon meeting this morning it was announced that the Committee on Resolutions was not ready to report. Consequently, here was no business before the House.

Money quote: The Douglas men are fighting for the Squatter Sovereignty principle with all their might and main. If it can be adopted, no power on earth can prevent the immediate nomination of DOUGLAS, but the South does not hesitate openly to say that if it is adopted they will leave the Convention.

Interesting.

Maybe the NYT was a serious newspaper in 1860?

Love the NY Times basically saying slavery can be humanized.

So the demonization (like by H Stowe) was okay with you?

I don't know about you, but I would much rather have been Mr. Jefferson's slave than a coal miner in west Virginia.

This discusses the platform dispute that led to the walk out of many of the southern delegates. The southern delegates wanted a stronger position on slavery in the territories, fugitive slaves, etc.

The convention and a separate convention of southern delegates reconvened in Baltimore. There were Democratic and Southern Democratic candidates. There was also a Constitutional Union Party, which did fairly well in the south, where Lincoln was not on the ballot.

Lincoln won all northern states and no southern or border states. Deep southern states seceded in response to his election and 4 other states seceded after Fort Sumter, Lincoln’s call for volunteers, etc.
