GALLUP, N.M. —

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has authorized the lockdown of Gallup at the mayor’s request.

The governor will invoke the state’s Riot Control Act, which will authorize her to enact further temporary restrictions to stop the spread of COVID-19 in that city.

The order goes into effect on Friday at 12 p.m. and will expire on Monday at noon.

The lock-down will order all roads into Gallup be closed, businesses in the city will close from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. and vehicles can have a max of two individuals. Residents are ordered to remain in their residence except for emergency outings for essential healthy, safety and welfare.

“I recognize this request is unusual and constitutes a drastic measure, and the emergency powers set out under the Riot Control Act should be invoked sparingly,” said Mayor Louis Bonaguidi. “However, the COVID-19 outbreak in the city of Gallup is a crisis of the highest order. Immediate action is necessary.”

“The spread of this virus in McKinley County is frightful,” said Gov. Lujan Grisham, “and it shows that physical distancing has not occurred and is not occurring. The virus is running amok there. It must be stopped, and stricter measures are necessary. A problem in one part of our state, with a virus this dangerous and this contagious, is a problem for our entire state. The imperative for all of us to remain home and physically distant has not changed. It is even more crucial for New Mexicans in the northwestern region. But what is happening in the northwest could happen in any part of our state. We must remain vigilant.”

As of Thursday, McKinley County had 1,027 reported cases of COVID-19. That is more than 30% of the state's total positive cases.

The left wasted no opportunity to excoriate Trump for various ‘travel bans’.

Gov Lujan-Grisholm just instituted a travel ban to a sovereign nation.

But high death counts in one family has happened in the NJ. That story hangs with me when I think of physical devastation, but emotional devastation, in one family, matriarch dead at 73, 3 or her children dead (2 before she died, 1 after). I was never able to find an article after March 20th that told what had happened to the other members, still in quarantine at the time of writing the article.

That is something I can't understand. They need to come right out and say who are the most affected.

Because it would largely point to nursing homes, the homeless, people in tightly packed immigrant communities in cities, and weird one-offs like these Indians. Then what would be the justification for keeping all of these suburban white people locked in their homes?

Navajo tribe. I worked with two until a couple weeks ago. They quit because of whats going on in the Rez.

Here is another..that area is also known as the downwinders area.

The area where most of the fallout from all the Nevada tests floated over.

Also, you have to remember that Fauci and Birx come out of the AIDS epidemic where you had to oh-so-carefully tippy tippy tippy tippy toe around saying ANYTHING that might be construed as less than PC.

It’s the politicization of science that will ultimately kill us all.

Thank you. FR is the place to be. I’m not in Gallup but have been there and nearby a few times. Barren, beautiful middle of Nowhere. God’s country.

That is part of the downwinder area.

It also has the highest rate of drunks in the USA.

Your a white person and you stop around there? Expect to have some type of theft done to you. One truck stop there has a long history of setting their pumps to run off some change on you before they start pumping. I know..

"How soon before those who test positive are put in separate quarantine quarters?"

no....the way it works is that if you are negative and healthy, YOU get put in quarantine....

What if a single mother with two children needs to take a child to the doctor?

(These micro-managing dictators are dangerous and insane).

yes and that scares me even more so

we sure hope this awful Lockdown is ended and put behind us, like ASAP!

we personally have avoided almost all crowded places or places which line up their customers just for the privilege of getting in to spend money

being anywhere near unemployed, frustrated, hurting people...is asking to get pulled into violence....

we did see a open loud threats to kill Un-safeway manager and clerk... when those individuals timried to impose purchase limits on customers at the checkout register (there were NO signs advising customers on any of the items in their carts, indeed that store has a marketing policy of pricing goods at “3 for $5” or (”10 for 9.99”...and they had all these regular price signs up on the shelves....so to suddenly tell customers that they could only have one of a 10 for 9.99 item......... which was not in short supply anyway.......was ASKING for violence....BEGGING for it, after the customers had all spent a half hour or more in line)......WE just turned our shopping cart over to a store worker and graciously, quietly exited. Went to the grocery next door and had NO waits and NO arbitrary limits.

my point is only that it is usually possible to avoid situations where violence is likely to break out. just pick the stores without crowds... or lines......a second strategy that is really helping with this is to shop at the early morning opening hour.......no lines, friendly clerks, and all the shelves have been restocked overnight so you get first selection.

still, with the tens of millions of people who have had their jobs or businesses taken away/closed.....they are angry as HELL....many of them are really hurting now...the politicians really MUST end this awful Lockdown, its doing such horrible damage to so many many innocent people....

smile smile smile

Gallup is one of the saddest cities in the US.

The high cancer rates from the boarded up uranium mines, the drunks wandering across the roads at night and the trains not allowing anyone to sleep, ever, the place just sucks.

Maybe not letting anyone exit might be best for all involved.

I would assume the health demographically for Native Americans is poor and immunodeficiency high due to: smoking, drinking, poor diet and disease such as cancer,diabetes,TB.etc. I also suspect social distancing was not taken seriously in a very social group.

Without getting into some debate,I think what has been done to them (and yes, what they themselves have done) is disgusting.

The Navajo and Apache are descended from the Athabaskan peoples, who supposedly were the last of groups from Asia that crossed the Bering Strait. Therefore they are the most related to Asians, who have problems with this virus.

If I remember correctly, it’s the most violent town in New Mexico, bar none.

And, as a former resident of Hobbes, that’s saying something.
