Gallup is on Lockdown (NM - No access to city from I-40)

GALLUP, N.M. —

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has authorized the lockdown of Gallup at the mayor’s request.

The governor will invoke the state’s Riot Control Act, which will authorize her to enact further temporary restrictions to stop the spread of COVID-19 in that city.

The order goes into effect on Friday at 12 p.m. and will expire on Monday at noon.

The lock-down will order all roads into Gallup be closed, businesses in the city will close from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. and vehicles can have a max of two individuals. Residents are ordered to remain in their residence except for emergency outings for essential healthy, safety and welfare.

“I recognize this request is unusual and constitutes a drastic measure, and the emergency powers set out under the Riot Control Act should be invoked sparingly,” said Mayor Louis Bonaguidi. “However, the COVID-19 outbreak in the city of Gallup is a crisis of the highest order. Immediate action is necessary.”

“The spread of this virus in McKinley County is frightful,” said Gov. Lujan Grisham, “and it shows that physical distancing has not occurred and is not occurring. The virus is running amok there. It must be stopped, and stricter measures are necessary. A problem in one part of our state, with a virus this dangerous and this contagious, is a problem for our entire state. The imperative for all of us to remain home and physically distant has not changed. It is even more crucial for New Mexicans in the northwestern region. But what is happening in the northwest could happen in any part of our state. We must remain vigilant.”

As of Thursday, McKinley County had 1,027 reported cases of COVID-19. That is more than 30% of the state's total positive cases.

This is nuts. You’d think it was a fricking zombie outbreak!

As far as I can tell, it’s only incoming access that’s being restricted. I’d be worried as much if not more about outgoing travelers, especially interstate travelers on I-40.

This part of the Southwest has had a number of illness events.
hantavirus back in the 80’s.

Navajo Nation does tend to keep to themselves which would isolate them from yearly flu season.

I guess it all depends on what you think overhyped is.

I tend to think a very highly contagious virus that has the ability to kill a lot of people (albeit a smaller percent of the entire population) and overwhelm a hospital system and senior care system that is not set up for something like this deserves everything we got, especially if people in one area are ignoring the rules and letting the virus run rampant.

Of course, it appears I am a minority on the discussion board but that’s how I feel.

Roughly 1 in 70 people in that county are infected. Roughly 1 in 50 in NYC. So why the martial law in Gallup?

In my county outside of NYC, it's about 1 in 35.

For your perusal...

https://www.historynet.com/smallpox-in-the-blankets.htm

“But the chain of events behind the one authentic case of deliberate smallpox contamination began in 1757 at the siege of Fort William Henry (in present-day upstate New York), when Indians allied with the French ignored the terms of a surrender worked out between the British and the French, broke into the garrison hospital and killed and scalped a number of patients, some of them suffering from smallpox.

The blankets and clothing the Indians looted from the patients in the hospital and corpses in the cemetery, carried back to their villages, reportedly touched off a smallpox epidemic.”

It was sad in VT. I imagine losing the tail end of the ski season killed VT this year.

We had no “steady” industry. The farms were all consolidating. So, anyone with any get up and go...got up and went.

The core population would give you the shirt off their backs for you. The fringes could be creepy. The real fringe were downright scary.

“Gallup has a high native american population, which seems to be vulnerable to covid.”

Not as high as McKinley County. Sounds like they are trying to protect Gallup.

I think that a big element in this is the concurrent opening up of Grants by its Mayor. Grants and Gallup compete for the western limits I-40 trade and development money. I have been in both two dozen visits and like aspects of each. Gallup is the one with more poverty but has a huge NA veteran’s tradition.

Is that based on current testing? The testing did not represent the population who had it. I believe NYC is something like 25 percent on the population based on the antibody studies. Thus it is more like 1 in 4 or 1 in 5.

I suspect the same could be said for this area too.

Further, as this is a highly contagious virus, things can get out of control extremely quick and the limited hospital resources the area had would be smoked of they aren’t already.

Wow. Talk about a stupid response. It’s because health conditions on reservations and Native Americans are usually pretty bad. Alcoholism, diabetes, etc.

“Gallup has close to 50% Indian population and their immune system doesn’t appear to be able to combat the virus. Native Americans have O type blood for example”

Man, the Indians can’t catch a break. 500 years ago it was white man’s disease that decimated them, today it’s yellow man’s disease.

Primarily in California and Arizona..it affects different groups differently..especially Filipinos and African heritage...unknown why..

“WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — Residents on the Navajo Nation will be under another lockdown this weekend as the tribe seeks to keep the coronavirus from spreading even further into communities.

The lockdown is the fourth the tribe has implemented. It comes around the first of the month when tribal members often travel to towns bordering the reservation to shop for food and other supplies....

...As of Tuesday, the tribe’s health officials reported 1,873 positive cases of COVID-19 and 60 deaths. The 27,000 square-mile (70,000 square-kilometer) reservation stretches into Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.”

https://www.thestate.com/news/article242366566.html#storylink=cpy

From early April:

“The measures are part of a scramble to protect more than 150,000 people on the vast Navajo reservation, which stretches 27,000 square miles across Arizona, New Mexico and Utah, and tens of thousands of others who live in towns bordering the Navajo Nation. As of Wednesday night, the virus had killed 20 people on the reservation, compared with 16 in the entire state of New Mexico, which has a population 13 times larger.”

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/09/us/coronavirus-navajo-nation.html

“In an effort to curb the rapid spread of the coronavirus in the Navajo Nation, the Navajo Department of Health issued an emergency public health order on April 17 mandating the use of masks outside the home, adding to existing orders that include sheltering in place and nightly and weekend curfews.

Native American communities have been hit particularly hard by coronavirus, the Navajo Nation the worst of all. As of April 18, the Nation, which spans parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, had 1,197 confirmed cases and 44 deaths. Were it a US state, it would fall at No. 3 for the number of confirmed coronavirus infections per capita, behind New York and New Jersey.”

Probably not made in China. Navajo and Zuni tribes are well populated with very good silversmiths and their jewelry is well regarded world wide.

Like anything though, it takes an experienced eye to gage quality. The cheap junk is probably from Mexico and machine made. Turquoise quality is all over the map and fine spiderwebing with a deep color that is not chemically are a plus. The best quality smithing will have hammer impressions from both being handmade and a greater silver content.
