It’s better than throwing your M$ machine out the window.

Lower level of Windows 10 is Linux.
Yes.
Linux is quite user friendly now, but there are still times I have to resort to the command line. We only have 1 Windows machine in the whole house-- my wife's. Daughter's machine is a Mac (a Unix variant, like Linux is).
Better? In some important ways (liek security) yes, in some ways no-
Have the best of both worlds- dual boot- with windows 7 and linux mint cinnamon edition- linux is my main os- i do nearly everything on it- except play windows only games and photoshop work- which is why i need windows 7- I’ve tried virtual machine on linux to run windows in and use photoshop- but no good- nor is it good for games- even under wine- so i dual boot-
As one of my kids likes to say, “It depends.”
It depends on what you do with your computer.
If you play current video games a lot, the answer is, “no.”
If you work in an office environment, and have to interface with others, and run their Excel macros, the answer is, “no.”
If you just surf the web and send emails, the answer is, “no difference.”
If you are computer science inclined and want to check out a lot of evolving programs, the answer is “probably yes.”
Just my humble opinion.
I have it installed on an 8 year old machine and it runs ten times as fast as a Windows machine. I also installed it on a 9 year old laptop running Windows 7 as a dual-boot computer and it runs MUCH faster than most Windows computers. It comes with Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird which imported all my bookmarks and email seamlessly. Windows is a resource hog. I hate it.
PS running Linux Mint Cinnamon
If not for two pieces of software that requires Windows, I would likely be 100 percent on Ubuntu Linux.
Are apples better than oranges?
Is Mac better than PC?
Not mocking you but better is too broad of a criteria.
Technically Linux is superior,
For organized mind types relate to PC well,
Artistic types like Mac/Apple...
So are you technical, organisational or artistic?
And, just what kinds of things are you desiring this tool to accomplish?
Just wanted to frame your inquiry a bit to help you sort the information.
Is a vacuum cleaner better than a toaster?
Yes, next question.
It really depends on what you want to do. If you want to play Windows based games or if you need certain Windows based software, just goe with a Windows operating system.
If you just want to access the internet, create a few documents and spreadsheets, etc., they you should give Linux a try.
Or set your computer to boot from a thumb drive first, and put Linux on a thumb drive. If you want Linux, start with the thumb drive in, if you want Windows, boot with the thumb drive out.
It used to be that Linux booted a lot faster than Windows, but as Linux packages have gotten bloated, and Windows has actually improved in that area, that’s no longer a reason to swtich. (There are some stripped down Linux packages out there if this is your need, however - see Puppy, for example).
If you haven’t looked there yet, start with Distrowatch - see what is poplular, what comes with the various packages, etc. Some offer an experiece almost identical to Windows, others need a fairly high level of expertiese to make work the way you want.
we inherited a windows 10 laptop recently, and it’s no powerhouse- and is slow as molasses (I’ve scanned for viruses- and the person who had it hardly did anything with it- She didn’t even do email on it- just played games with it really- so not l ikely there is a virus- but who knows)
It really crawls- with the ‘loading’ circle always popping up- it’s a mess- so i put linux on a partition, and use that on the computer now almost exclusively- it’s still slow- but way faster than the windows 10, and doesn’t constantly freeze like windows 10 does on the computer-
Linux makes the laptop usable at least- the only issue is that the wireless modem doesn’t stay connected- whereas the windows one does for the most part- not sure why- the wireless component in the computer is a crappy one- probably that has something to do with it- linux likely doesn’t have a good driver for it or something- I’m not gonna muck with it though-
But yeah- linux saved the computer- don’t understand why companies woudl load windows 10 onto a weak laptop like that (low memory, not a good internal video component- etc- )- the computer just seems not to be able to handle windows 10
If you are a gamer or run intuit products, no. Otherwise, hell yes. If you just run intuit turbotax just set up a virtual machine under the linux system running windows and run it there once a year, otherwise Linux is vastly superior. I recommend someone coming from windows start with Linux Mint. Nice interface. All the Ubuntu (programs) stuff works on it. Very user friendly. Rock solid stability. Runs fast. Office suite and email are good. Not a big learning curve for windows users. Average user will not need to ever drop to command line and do anything there. Security in Linux is not an afterthought like it is in windows.
Ping
Take a guess.
Windows is for children that have to play every game on release day, or for artists that only know how to use adobe products. Or simply for Satanists.
For everything else, Linux performs better.
Linux has excellent ease of use features. It works well, and it has far less nonsense than Windows. Linux also has professional level customer support.
Windows is full-featured but it introduced more and more nonsense that makes the user experience less rewarding and more frustrating.
Third-party companies like printer manufacturers also have come on board with Linux.
Linux is also primarily free. As someone who runs very large systems, I cannot afford Windows at $800+ per server plus $8,000+ per database and $300,000 per enterprise database. Linux is affordable and provides the level of professional computing I need.
I would never had said this 10 years ago, but Linux has significantly matured since then.
For the home user, it may present too much technical know-how, but I’d recommend giving it a try if you have a spare computer to try it on.
Linux Mint would by my recommendation for a home user.
Better? It’s different. If you prefer to have more control over your PC, and don’t mind doing some configuration and setup yourself, it’s better. If you want automatic updates and want the OS to handle more things while you concentrate on the tasks you actually want to use your computer for, Windows 10 might be the way to go. My house has computers running both (and also Mac OS and OpenBSD).
For security reasons alone I would definitely say absolutely. I will never look back at MS again.
The best computer system to use is the one you already understand well. Unless you have expert level needs, or multi-platform job requirements, switching between operating systems is usually more aggravating than helpful.
That said, Windows security sux, so does Androids
