From Our Own Correspondent. CHICAGO, Friday, May 18, 1860. Time flies quickly, and wise men work with the motto before them that "Time is money." This has been preeminently the case with the Convention which met on Wednesday in the Republican Wigwam of this city, to nominate candidates for President and Vice-President of the United States.

Long ere this reaches you, the telegraphic communication of your special correspondent has informed you that the deed is done; -- that on the third ballot the Convention determined to place the standard of the party in the hands of ABRAM LINCOLN.

I guess Mayor Daley wasn’t around then.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

1860 Chicago mayoral election

In the Chicago mayoral election of 1860, Democrat John Wentworth defeated Republican Walter S. Gurnee.

Both candidates had served as mayor before and, incidentally, each had previously been mayor under the opposite party affiliation. Gurnee had served two terms as a Democrat, having been elected in 1851 and 1852, Wentworth had previously served one term as a Republican, having been elected in 1857.

The election was held on March 3.[1]

Damn! Those guys could write back then! Wonderful prose; the reader can really get a feel for what was happening at the convention. Too bad that today, the writers want to editorialize and fact-check every point according to the liberal narrative.
