1813 - HMS Shannon, commanded by Capt. Philip Broke, captures USS Chesapeake, commanded by Capt. James Lawrence off the coast of Boston, Mass. During the battle, Capt. Lawrence is mortally wounded, but as he is carried below deck, he orders the iconic phrase: "Tell the men to fire faster! Don't give up the ship!"

Until Jackson and the (post news of war ending treaty reached America) Battle of New Orleans the Navy, including a makeshift fresh water flotilla on the Great Lakes, presented most of the few American victories. It and the Air (and Space) forces would still be our bulwarks if we managed to avoid being mired in endless ground wars and occupation duty.
