Correspondence of the Missouri Republican. MESILLA, May 25, 1860. News arrived in town this morning that the family of Don JOSE MIGUEL MONTOYA, residing upon a ranche about five miles from this place, near the town of Santa Tomas, had been murdered by the Apaches. It seems that a valuable lot of mules were kept in the "corral" of the ranche, and that a party of Indians numbering some twelve or thirteen, attempted to steal the animals. They were resisted by the family; in the fight which ensued, Don JOSE, his wife, three children and a peon were killed. One small child about 9 years of age was taken prisoner, and the animals all stolen. The ranche was then fired and burned to the ground. One old peon, who was severely wounded and left for dead, is the only person left to tell the tale. On the night before this, six valuable horses were stolen from the Stephenson Mining Hacienda, belonging to Maj. SPRAGUE, U.S.A. In fact, scarcely a day passes but we might chronicle some new depredation, were we so disposed. Since the order has been received, and the troops at Fort Fillmore have left that post, these depredations are much more common than heretofore.

June 8, 1860. Cincinnati Daily Press, Cincinnati, Ohio. Large Irish exodus from Ireland – Column 4.

June 8, 1860. New Oregon Plaindealer, New Oregon, Iowa. Homestead government land – Columns 1, 2, and 3. John Brown participant not given up by a governor, Lincoln did not support troops in Mexican War – both in Column 3. (My comment: IIRC, Lincoln may actually have voted to supply the troops, but he did vote to censure President Polk for beginning the Mexican War. I have read somewhere that that censure vote was the reason Lincoln did not get selected to be a candidate for representative to the US House of Representatives again.)

The eighteen sixties were a very tough time for the residents of the Arizona Territory. And the Civil War didn’t help.
