Lift every voice and sing
Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us,
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun
Let us march on till victory is won.
Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand.
True to our God,
True to our native land.

Ha! Yes, please play this all the time. suck it blm.
The majority of the ones demanding this wouldn’t be able to read the lyrics, much less understand them. (Not that they make much sense to begin with, reads like a string of some stoned new age affirmations)
I thought it was:
“Play that funky music, white boy
play that funky music right
play that funky music white boy
lay down that rythm and
play that funky music ‘till you die.”
The man who wrote the poem this is based on was a Republican. Don’t know about guy who wrote the music
Its not the National Anthem. We only have one of those.
As per the PBS page above:
Many people are surprised to learn that "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was first written as a poem. Created by James Weldon Johnson, it was performed for the first time by 500 school children in celebration of President Lincoln's Birthday on February 12, 1900 in Jacksonville, FL...
It can played but not in place of the National anthem.
Ooooh -— they’re saying “funky?”
Yes, I’m thinking it can be added to “America the Beautiful” or “God Bless America” — but not replace “Star Spangled Banner” agreed!

Yeah well, that's pretty much what happened to the whole deal...
“The man who wrote the poem this is based on was a Republican. Dont know about guy who wrote the music”
His brother wrote the music.
Lol Maybe.... maybe not?
It is a wonderful hymn.
I am surprised it isn’t considered too religious for the NFL. Will it be edited?
If only they would teach it in school. A black man wrote like this, when oppression was real. Aspire to write as well, no matter your color, to have such mastery of the English language.
Let’s coopt it!
Take it as our own! Written by one of us for ALL people equally!
I like the words ... especially the part about not forgetting the Lord.
Victory over what? Capitalism? They are already more than equal citizens in the best nation in the history of mankind. What they want now has already happened in Zimbabwe and the result is horrifying.
Not if we’re gonna call it the black national anthem.
YES!!!
