On July 4, 1776 the Continental Congress signed a declaration of war.
They put the king and parliament of Great Britain on notice that the American Colonies would have to be beaten into submission if Britain intended to keep them under the dominion of the King.
The United States would fight another 8 years to gain their independence.

Forgotten in all of this is the Civil War that many white soldiers died to free the slave population and provide an opportunity for independence that doesn’t exist in many countries.

And here I thought that independence day was about one country breaking away from the clutches of another country.
