In the present thermometrical range of the weather, atmospherical and political, it is of the utmost importance that facts should come to us at a reduced temperature. From all inordinate and violent excitements we crave immunity; for surely at 90° Farenheit, with the effects of Summer, of a stormy session of Congress, and of a half dozen convulsive Conventions upon us, there is every reason to seek deliverance from influences which accelerate the pulse, and fan to fiercer heat the flames of partisan combustion. It is most unfortunate, therefore, that this should be the crisis for occurrences such as the telegraph reports from Texas, where the whole of the important and thickly-settled region adjoining the Northeastern boundary is stated to be in a condition of abnormal excitement, owing to the wicked and malicious intrigues of certain Northern Abolitionists. Whole towns are said to have been burned, property valued at three-fourths of a million dollars, a portentous sum in a new district, destroyed; and this as a mere prelude, to an uprising of slaves which was to convert universal arson into universal slaughter and revolution. Partial confirmation of this startling intelligence, which came overland to St. Louis, has descended the Red River to New-Orleans, whence we learn that three of the white conspirators had been arrested in Washington County, a point, strange to say, quite distant from the conflagrations, and toward the centre of the State. When we are told that great excitement exists "at the discovery of this fiendish plot," and that "prompt measures were being taken for the preservation of life and property," we may readily appreciate that the lives of these Washington County captives are not worth a pin's fee. They will doubtless be dispatched with the short shrift afforded by Judge Lynch.
