The Seattle City Council voted with some compromise in an ongoing budget battle with Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan.
It came a day after widespread criticism of the council for its handling of the police department budget, which was cited by Chief Carmen Best as a reason for her sudden resignation.
Councilmember Andrew Lewis noted that there was a real friction between the council and mayor, and it was spilling into everything the elected leaders do.
It was the precursor for a discussion over whether to overturn a mayoral veto on spending $86 million on city reserves. Durkan vetoed the legislation, citing a need to be prudent, given an ever-growing budget deficit.
This week, the citys budget office suggested the hole is now over $325 million because of the economic downturn related to COVID-19.
In a bit of complicated legislative gymnastics, the council agreed to overturn the veto, by a vote of 6-2, before then approving an amended piece of legislation using a smaller total of $57 million from city reserves. That was approved 7-1, with the only no vote belonging to Kshama Sawant.

I don’t see in the article what the reserve money going to be spent on.
I’m assuming that it will be spent on some Pie in the Sky socialist experiment rather than to plug the deficit hole.
I had to laugh to about how they expect to get that money through more taxes when the reason they have a big deficit is because business is so bad. Blood out from stones and all of that.
One big plus was they appointed James E. Craig as police chief. He really has turned things around.
It is far from perfect, but the city is much better off than it was when the Police chief was simply a tool of the Mayor and City Council.
I have read a bit about the Detroit “turn around”. As you said, while the city is not a shining example of a well run city, appointing leaders for things like the Police Department, fire department who have real world experience and letting them do what needs to be done and supporting their decisions has really helped get needed equipment, staff who can actually accomplish things.
Sawant is a psychopathic communist and responsible for protecting Antifa and BLM rioters/looters/shooters.
Re Seattle: I wonder if Seattle issued guaranteed bonds and it they are worth anything right now if cashed in.
Yes she is the cancer. And Seattle is suffering greatly because of this one person. It’s a shame that one idiot can destroy a city
Can Kshama explain where the $1B/yr for 5 years Seattle spent for the indigent and homeless went to? What did the nonprofits spend all that money on? Nobody seems to want to know.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Meanwhile Inslee is reallocating $40 million of Cares act funds for Illegals.
one person , one minute , end of problem
solved problem in one minute
I think Sawant is the symptom (nausea and vomiting) and her idiotic voters are the underlying cause (the cancer).
Didn’t she let the protesters into an area that was off limits to them?
Somebody votes for these people. People get the kind of government they deserve.
She is the cancer.
Two years ago Sawant was the extreme left wing of the Seattle City Council. Now she's in the middle.
