Cruising is easy. Or so cruisers will tell you.
For starters, you only have to unpack once, even as you travel from place to place. You also dont have to go hunting for a restaurant every night. There usually are a bunch just steps away from your cabin, and they have tables waiting for you. And youll have no trouble finding entertainment.
But even in its simplicity, cruising still can be daunting for a first-timer. What should you bring? What should you plan on doing in ports? What is the best way to book?
As The Points Guys cruise writer, I get these sorts of questions all the time.
Which brings me to the tips below. If youve read this far, you are likely a first-time cruiser looking for advice for an upcoming trip, and thats exactly what this story is meant to offer. It contains my list of 21 ways to make the first sailing go more smoothly.
Arrive at your departure port a day ahead of schedule If you only follow one piece of advice in this story, it should be this one. It is the only way to ensure you wont miss your ship something that happens to cruisers more often than you would think.
If youre traveling overseas for a cruise, we recommend traveling to the port two or even three days in advance. This isnt just so you dont miss the ship. Its also so you have some time to recover from jet lag.
Throw all the clothes you think youll need on a cruise in a pile, and then take out half of it. You wont need it. Trust us. Most cruising these days is casual, and you really only need a few outfits to rotate through a voyage...(plenty more in the article)

My daughter and her husband are so cranked up about cruising, when I talked to her yesterday she was planning 3 cruises in 2021,one to ALASKA (again) one to BERMUDA (again) and one to EUROPE to see the northern lights.-Tom
We went on a weekend cruize from Long Beach, CA to Mexico about 12 years ago. The only cruise we ever went on. How we did it:
We stayed in our room during the safety thingee.
toured the boat.
The food was free, no matter what you ate, so we only ate the good stuff.
We never left the boat. I’ve been to mexico. It sucks.
It was fun, but the only reason I’d do a cruise in the future is if my wife died and I needed a retirement home. It would probably be a cruise ship - until it was time for a nursing home, if it ever happened.
I love cruising I can’t wait to go next year! Bermuda is my favorite destination.
Pack lots of hydroxychloroquine.
#1...carry lots of Depends
#2...carry lots of barf bags
Interesting, thanks for this thread! We’ve been on a couple of cruises, but... it’s been a long time. Hope to go on more cruises in the future once the China Virus subsides.
I’ve been everywhere and an Alaska cruise with my kids, when they were younger, is a highlight trip. The excursions can add up!
I have no interest in confining myself within a giant petri dish with 5000 other people.
What if the cruise is upriver into Cambodia to kill Superman’s father?
I always did my cruises the last of Feb. into March starting around 1970.
About 7 years ago my wife came down with Alzheimer's and I had to eliminate the air travel from Boston and hotel stay near the Cruise ship from our cruise vacation .
The last five years in October we have done the Boston to Bermuda cruise and really enjoyed it. Three on Norwegian Dawn and two on Royal Caribbean, Serenade of the Seas.
This October it got cancelled.-Tom

I’ve caught more nasty stuff in church than on cruises. (I do, and enjoy, both.)
Hope to go on more cruises in the future once the China Virus subsides.
Just wait till November 4th.
Yeah, that’s right. LOL!
If you paid for my ticket, I wouldn’t go on a cruise. Disarmed, marooned on a boat with hundreds of strangers for weeks? Sounds like a definition of a prison ship to me.
This will be the first year we can’t cruise to Hawaii because of Covid-19. All the other years it’s been because we couldn’t afford it.
You and me both; when I go on vacation, I want to get as far away from people as I can.
1. Take your own cruise, in your own boat.
Sorry about hour wife.
I had my fist boat in 1949,a 14 foot Delano Dory and had other larger boats since.
In February when the boat is out of the water, and the snow is on the ground ,that is when I want to be at sea where it is warm. A cruise never disappointed me. -Tom
