CHICAGO, Monday, Sept. 10 -- Noon Mrs. JANE COOK, Miss ELIZABETH ANN COOK, OF Fond du Lac, Mrs. FRANKLIN HOPKINS and a son of Deputy U. S. Marshal BURNS, of Milwaukee, are among the lost by the Lady Elgin. THOMAS KENNEDY, reported lost, is saved. All accounts represent the City of Milwaukee as shrouded in mourning, and business seems to be entirely suspended. The Republican demonstration set down for the reception of Senator SEWARD to-day, has been postponed GARDINER S. HUBBARD, owner of the Lady Elgin, has libeled the schooner Augusta for $4,200, and the vessel has been taken in charge of by the United States Marshal. This will bring out a full investigation of the affair. The body of HERBERT INGRAHAM, member of the British Parliament, has been recovered, and taken in charge by his friends. Up to this morning twenty-seven bodies have been recovered.

I had never heard of the Lady Eglin sinking before so your post just looked like word salad without knowledge of what happened. From Wikipedia:

The PS Lady Elgin was a wooden-hulled sidewheel steamship that sank in Lake Michigan off the fledgling town of Port Clinton, Illinois, whose geography is now divided between Highland Park and Highwood, Illinois, after she was rammed in a gale by the schooner Augusta in the early hours of September 8, 1860. The passenger manifest was lost with the collision, but the sinking of Lady Elgin resulted in the loss of about 300 lives[2] in what was called "one of the greatest marine horrors on record". Four years after the disaster, a new rule required sailing vessels to carry running lights. The Lady Elgin disaster remains the greatest loss of life on open water in the history of the Great Lakes.[3]
