A long ongoing problem. There have been numerous posts over the years that have shown interesting ways to make it difficult to take a sign.

Liberally coat the back of them with thick automotive / marine grease. I’ve worked with some black stuff that was weatherproof and very difficult to get off of your hands and clothing.

Unless you have a great local police force, there really is no good solution. I’d consider a motion-activated camera. And connect the signs to a hidden personal alarm, one with a pin. Pull the pin, and the alarm goes off. Something like this one:

Here’s something not to do: Don’t set up a booby-trap device meant to injure the thief. Yes, they deserve to be injured. But civil suits are costly, even if you win.

You might also want to coat the back of the signs with Permatex Anti-Seize compound. It’s shiny silver grease that gets EVERYWHERE. I think it’s pretty weatherproof too.

Well cameras are OK I guess.
But I am trying to place thousands of signs. Here in AZ the ground is hard and the weather hot. It is hard job!
So cameras are not practical for all the signs.
I heard that people put something yucky on the signs to make them (robbers) go away? Or mousetraps? Do you have an idea what to put on them?
Or something else on that line of thought?

Put the signs inside a plexi case and anchor that into ground very well. Stinging/burning gel on back. Vaseline impregnated with broken light bulb fine fragments smeared on it.

Put a pair of work boots in front of the sign.
The thieves wont recognize or be be able to move the boots so the sign will be safe.

I bought several of these on Amazon. They work great and drown out the noise. I also gave a couple to a gal I dated for a short time as personal protection.

Ok, I'm assuming you're putting them in the right-of-way around town and not your personal property? If so, I don't think there's a lot you can do about it. Nor am I sure that rises to a felony; that being said, I realize different places have different laws.

One suggestion I do have is to spray them with skunk spray. It may not keep the signs from being stolen, but the thief will wish s/he hadn't!

Spray the signs with Barfume. It’s a spray that smells like vomit.

if you can’t stop them from stealing them maybe you could rub poison ivy all over them first.
Leave them a little something!

Before coating the signs with this grease, take a couple of ghost peppers and steep them in the grease for at least a day, preferably longer.

Not only with the grease coat their hands and everything the touch. It will make them very, very uncomfortable!
