Marine Corps rolls out the M18, the first new service pistol since the Reagan era

The Marine Corps has fielded its first new service pistol in 35 years, Pentagon officials announced Tuesday, with M18s now being issued across the service.

Marine Corps leaders said the M18 Modular Handgun System will replace all other sidearms, including the M9, M9A1, M45A1 and M007. The transition, which began earlier this month, comes amid a broader shift across the military toward a new generation of handguns.

“Overall, the adoption of the M18 by the Marine Corps is an extremely positive decision that will benefit the Corps and enhance Marines’ safety and effectiveness when conducting missions,” said Tom Vass, the Army’s project officer for the Sig Sauer-made pistol, which has its U.S. headquarters in Exeter, New Hampshire.

The Marine Corps move toward the M18 is part of a broader Army-led program which began in 2017. Officials said the Marine Corps will buy its M18s — along with new holsters — through an Army contract.

I have a Colt Commando Spl .38 as well as a 9mm Ruger LC9s pro, as my church guns, but I have preferred the .45 standard size as my daily carry. Might not be so good for someone of lesser frame or a girl.

I regret that there wasn’t an American arms company that designed a pistol for our military. We used to make the best small arms in the world.

I also carry a 5” 1911 Kimber .45 ACP “Eclipse Target II” w/ Rosewood Crimson Trace Laser grips, and use only Wilson Combat 8rnd stainless Officer’s Mags.

“You can’t improve on perfection.”

Hear, hear.

Better to improve Marines until the 1911 suits them than to change guns because women can’t handle them.

This is why you can’t buy Sigs.

Why buy Sigs when so many Glocks are available? 😎

And on the 46th post, the REAL TRUTH was written, women can't handle them, so downgrade the fire power.

Some people are Sig snobs. And yes, Glocks are generally available.

For some folks Glock ergonomics don’t cut it. I’ve never had a SIG that wasn’t 100% reliable, including several in .38 Super.

I’m guessing it is a play on words? The folks with the 9mm are the ones that are killed?

Yeah, I recognized them at first glance, and posted an image of the M9 showing the same silhouette as the photo. I just didn't understand why the leading photo of the article didn't match up the sidearms with the pistol featured in the title.

Sig Sauer is an excellent platform and a great EDC because of its reliability.

I got turned on to Glocks by a cop friend years ago and do carry a G-19, but I will admit that I don't keep a round in the chamber.

Son and I were out at the range today and my Glock just shoots so nicely, son does outscore me though with his Taurus PT-111, which he EDC's.

The G19 is a great gun, just doesn’t fit my hand. I’ve had bad luck with Taurus, glad your son like his. Every auto I have now is a SIG except a 1922 Colt Pocket Hammerless in .380.
