In the bid to find a Covid-19 vaccine wildlife experts claim half a million sharks could be slaughtered for the much anticipated jab.

Squalene, a natural oil made in the liver of sharks, is used medicine and is also used as an adjuvant to increase the effectiveness of a vaccine.

It is also being used in trial vaccines for the coronavirus.

If a drug passes that contains squalene and goes into production across the world conservationist group Shark Allies believe around 250,000 sharks will need to be slaughtered to provide one dose for each person.

That figure doubles and becomes more dire if people need two shots instead of one to fully vaccinate against Covid-19.

Stefanie Brendl, founder and executive director of Shark Allies, said: "Harvesting something from a wild animal is never going to be sustainable, especially if it's a top predator that doesn't reproduce in huge numbers."

In a Facebook post, she added: "We are not trying to slow down or hinder the production of a vaccine.

"We simply ask that testing of non-animal derived squalene is conducted alongside shark squalene so it can be replaced as soon as possible.

I would assume that thinning the shark population would have effects lie when they decided to thin wolf populations in several areas - caused way more problems than they solved....and I wager fewer eat wolf meat than shark meat.

That's a lot of sharks and they say at least another dose may be required.

My suggestion? First report separately hospitalizations and deaths should only be in the actual date of death.

Lots of people get colds but they just buy extra Kleenex. The seriousness of the CV-19 Chinese virus as we go forward is defined by those two factors but hospitalizations are not reported in general especially by the media.

If death dates are just reported as they come in then May deaths can be in September calendars. Not helpful information.

Also more and more testing is being one so more positive results will be found but we know most or mild or completely asymptomatic.

Hospitalizations? Immediately go with AZQ, Zinc and Zpack.

It works just like the Aids cocktail.

I think we've got it under control but our economy continues to be decimated.

Some of the largest sharks are harmless filter feeders: The Basking Shark, the Whale Shark and the Megamouth Sharks all feed on plankton.

A problem, however, might lie in sharks need for LOTS of space. No Great White, for example, has ever been successfully kept in captivity for over 200 days, and even that (198 days) was a small Great White @ 4 ft. long. The “tank” held nearly 1 million gallons of water and was almost 35 ft. deep.

This is partially due to sharks need to keep swimming to pass oxygenated water over their gills.

How much space a few adult breeders in the filter feeder category might need, I do not know. Ditto for juveniles (I assume) to be harvested.

But there’s always those carriers that keep coronavirus active until the next mutation. If you can get immune by getting over the sickness, it would seem that a vaccine might be reasonable for it.
