THE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN: Great Republican Meeting at Binghamton; ANOTHER WIDE-AWAKE DEMONSTRATION (10/25/1860)

Special Dispatch to the New-York Times. BINGHAMTON, Wednesday, Oct 24. There was a great gathering of people here today, including delegations from all the neighboring towns. The speaking commenced at 1 o'clock, and continued through the afternoon and evening. Mr. SEWARD was the first speaker. He was reserved with much enthusiasm, and commenced by saying that they were all acquainted with the science of necromonics -- a science based on the fact that ideas were assigned to depositories. It was his habit to associate ideas with rivers, plains and mountains. He associated with Palestine the three great religious ideas which had arisen there -- Judaism, Christianity and Mohammedanism. The Nile was suggestive of civilization, spontaneous and inexhaustible. The northern Mediterranean was the seat of Liberty, and its seeds still lingered there. The Seine was the theatre of an ambition, less, for power and empire, than glory; and the Thames was wedded to the idea of the extension of power rather than of liberty in America. Plymouth Rock was associated with vigorous sentiments and ready invention. The Hudson, with an energetic pushing civilization, and the Mississippi with concentrated and consolidated agricultural power. The Susquehanna and the Chenango valleys, with their hills covered with mist and cloud, led to dreamy reflection and contemplation, until this great artery of trade and intercourse -- the Erie Railroad -- opened up the outside affairs of the world, and covered them with humanity entire. But this was still a place from which to contemplate the phenomenon of the world. The great phenomenon of our day was not the Prince of Wales, or his visit. That was valuetess, except as a sign of returning amity and fraternity. It imparted the idea only that England wanted friends, and looked to us in her need.
