A Texas waitress who claimed she was stiffed on a mystery diner’s $2,000 tip will take home the money after all — now that her employer has agreed to cut her a check.
Emily Bauer, 21, will be given the money by the owner of Red Hook Seafood and Bar in San Antonio after the joint claims the diner’s credit card transaction didn’t go through, news station KENS reported.
“It’s Christmas time, and everybody is struggling,” owner John Cheng told the outlet Wednesday. “I’m ready to give it to her as a Christmas gift.”
Cheng reportedly wrote Bauer a check for $2,069.01, which is the tip amount plus the cost of the customer’s bill.
“The fact that the owner of my job is willing to give it to me, even though it wasn’t his mess-up, I can’t thank him enough for that,” she told the news station.

Update.
Funny stuff going on here.
She’s a struggling waitress and she’s going to blow $2k on toys?
Probably got more than that worth of publicity.
What’s funny is that the media totally screwed up the story from the get go.
The tip was put on a credit card. She, nor the restaurant, could collect on that tip until the credit card paid it. And the credit card bank had to do it’s due diligence to make sure this was legitimate and not just a forgery.
But the damage to Red Hook has been massive. They should sue the media. But what good would that do?.
My guess. Drunk idiot leaves $1000 tip to the pretty waitress. Card processor declines as being way out of the ordinary. Meanwhile, drunk idiot gets home and the ball and chain finds out about the $1000 tip and all hell breaks loose. Has “second thoughts” among screeches of HALF! REEEEEE! HALF! In the end both the waitress and the owner got trolled in a rather cruel way.
That is so not true. See post number seven for the facts
Which explains why she’s a struggling waitress.....
At first she was claiming that her employer was trying to stiff her on the tip. Now we hear that the owner claims the the credit card transaction was declined, but is going to give her the money anyway. That’s quite a 180. I wonder what really happened.
After having an online bank do “due diligence” to my family, close all our accounts, seize all our funds, and keep us from paying bills and holding on to our money until my congressman’s staff got involved... Yeah, there’s funny stuff going on here but at this point I’d be willing to say the bank did it.
I am a life long accounting person.
I have done books for 2 different food establishments.
There is NO way the bank would not process that credit card amount-—
IF there were any questions, the restaurant manager would be able to verify it was correct, as would the card holder.
With the prices in many places, a $2000 credit card charge should not have been handled in this way.
The waitress got the tip-——NOT the business owner.
““I’m ready to give it to her as a Christmas gift.””
Nonsense. The patron gave her the tip and the employer tried to make excuses to keep it.
That is exactly what happened. How many times have you paid with a credit card and just walked away when the transaction didn't go through?
She’s a mom splurging on her kids. Chill out.
Not true. Read the article. The employer, the restaurant, never had the tip in the first place. The bank denied it.
I am still POd for being misled buy the first story.
