I have emailed NEWSMAX about the terrible closed captioning on their programs describing how President Reagan words to Gorbachev were rendered as: "Mr. Gorbachev, SHARE this wall."
Yesterday, the ad urging people who had taken Zantac or the generic and developed cancer to call a number, the generic, ranitidine, was rendered as "RAN INTO DEAN."
Just now Mike Huckabee was introduced as "MY CARD. MMM-HMM. Would appreciate it if others would complain about this gibberish. Otherwise I think NEWSMAX is terrific. But there are people out here that would like to watch it and are hearing impaired. So could use some help bringing this to their attention.
It’s done by an AI computer transcription and untouched by human hands and ears. No company has the manpower available to do human checking of all the transcriptions.
My doctor transcribes her after-visit reports with me using an AI voice transcription tool. It’s fairly accurate, but there a lot of obvious bloopers, some of which are hilarious.
Someday AI will get smart enough to do 100% accurate transcriptions, but, at that point, it will probably be smart enough to realize the best thing it can do is eliminate all humans.
Was the CC set to "Woke"?
The closed captions on youtube can be really bad, also.
That might also be the root of the atrocious grammar.
Newsmax is a small station so I'm sure they could not afford transcribers to provide closed captioning although that may change if they're becoming a bigger network.
A few examples I've noted lately: covert = covid. Cabot Lodge = sabotage. Century city = sanctuary city. Forever gin = Prevagen.
One transcriber I've learned to ID inserts "stomach" every so often and I've never been able to figure out what it's supposed to mean. Often there are no captions for a minute or so, then there's a torrent that would challenge even the fastest speed reader. It's a real problem for us hearing-impaired folks who want to stay informed.
These are voice to text transcriptions. Newsmax is not going to hire someone to do live, real time transcriptions.
They are a second rate production company. They will be for a while.
At least the auto-correct in Edge (marginal use) is not that bad, but inferior to that of Firefox and which you can easily find and edit.
I'll give them a call when I get home.....
They should hire Bad Lip Reading. It might be an improvement.
Not funny.
It costs money. They’ll probably get a better system when they can afford it. Or maybe they just need to speak clearly for the AI.
It’ll probably get transcribed as:
Ural clothes cap shunning is Phil with air oars.
Mmmm, it's all a function of what you are willing to pay for it. Rush has referenced his is nearly perfect but he has to wait for the program's self-correction to catch up for a second ot two occasionally.
LOL is Huckabee the new Rush?
Rush Hudson Limbaugh....MMMM. MMMMM. MMMM!!!! (To kids’ Barack Hussein Obama...)
Michael Huckabee...MMMM MMMM MMMM!!!
And people criticize the use of ASL interpreters for news briefs and other public service announcements.
Imagine depending on closed captioning to learn something.
As a former Broadcast TV Producer, I had to pay $500 for each half hour segment that I submitted to the networks. Occasionally, they’d use this lazy AI software and just pocket my money. If you write to the FCC about this ineptitude (and presuming it is not a live broadcast) , while also emphasizing that you are Hearing Impaired, they will give ONE warning to the controllers at the network before issuing heavy fines for a second complaint by you. It’s worth a try.
I know that most of you have stopped watching FoxNews but I still depend on the news they give. I refuse to watch CNN, NBC, et al. for the junk they put out. NewsMax is not on my cable list.
Anyway, FoxNews really frustrates me because when Tucker Carlson gets ready to make an important point, the captions seem to always stop!
GRRRRRRRR!!!!
