'Bridgerton’ meant to integrate period romances. So why is it so hard on Black women?
Washington Post ^ | December 28, 2020 | Alyssa Rosenberg

"Bridgerton,” the new series based on Julia Quinn’s romance novels and developed by hitmaker Shonda Rhimes and showrunner Chris Van Dusen for Netflix, is a Christmas cookie of a show — a sugary, sparkly treat that serves as a comfort in a grim winter. And in integrating the predominantly White world of romance novels by making some of Quinn’s characters Black, the show inadvertently provides a useful lesson for an entertainment industry struggling to meet viewers’ demands and corporate mandates for more diverse programming.

Is there really “viewer demand” for this?

I guess the books this is based on has a large female fanbase. I wonder how they are reacting to their Regency Romance being hi hacked by a race hustler

One can tell the MSM is really invested in this succeeding. They are devoting a small team to cover this.

Integration and diversity on TV, has gotten to the point of being ridiculous and laughable.

Example:

Far too many couples on TV commercials are mixed.

Far too many commercials feature at least one black, and in many cases, blacks are the main characters.

One would think that blacks are now the majority of Americans, if the commercials were to be believed.

Diversity is okay, but things have gone way overboard.

And blacks are not even the majority nor the biggest ‘minority’, where Hispanics now outnumber them. Next, Hispanics will be demanding their equality in the diversity scales.

It’s way overdone and ridiculous.

I managed to get through 10 minutes or so of it until an African-American Queen Charlotte was introduced. Then the ton ball with a black duke and dowager duchess. It was ridiculous! The only blacks in regency England were scullion maids and stable hands. 😆

They are obviously trying to follow the lead of the 2008 BBC “Merlin” series, where Arthur is white and Guinevere is black.
The result is nobody will watch anything after the 3rd episode.

Not from me, but I have the books.

And it’s on Netflix, which we dumped years ago.

And the executive producer is an Obama crony.

That makes it a three-fer for won’t see TV at my house

It’s not just about the skin color of the cast.

It’s a woke, sexed-up mess.

This went high gear a few years ago with the screwed up idea to PRETEND Alexander Hamilton was black.

Sorry, there is no excuse for lying about historical events to fit your utopian vision, that is a fascist tactic.

We have reached a point in which 99% of new programming is simply not worth watching. Arts & Entertainment are now too woke to bother with. Watch old stuff. Forget about new stuff. Besides, there's already enough old and better stuff to watch without seeking out this crap.

Well, I like them. I like the historical romance genre, and Julia Quinn is an excellent writer.

This is what Hollyweird doesn't get. They sell the series to book fans and then screw them over and lose that audience. My bet is non-book readers won't make up the difference. They haven't for Outlander, which has done something similarly stupid if not as egregious.

Sounds like you and I reached about the same point. I watched it on the basis that comparisons were drawn to Downton Abbey. Obviously, the same points you mentioned just floored me. I finally turned it off when I was saying to myself “Why is everyone acting like this is normal?”. Even if I offered the benefit of the doubt and recognized that there possibly could have been a few black people that rose to the level of the gentry in regency England, it would HAVE to be considered intolerable for the possibility of the mixing of races (at that time). But there was NO comment or insinuation to that effect. Finally, turned it off.

FWIW, a much better treatment of source material and very good TV is Discovery of Witches. I love Harkness's first three books and the TV treatment has done well by them. At least so far.

Yes, the couples are mixed (and I have no problem with that in real life, of course). But 99% of the time, it’s a black woman with a white man, it seems.

Not sure what to make of that.

At least the commercials with black families show a husband, a wife, and children, living together as a nuclear family. That is one very positive thing I can see out of this trend.

And your comment about Hispanics reminds me of that episode of Seinfeld where Jerry comments that salsa is the most requested condiment. He said it’s because people like to say “salsa.” “Salsa salsa, salsa!” LOL.

I bought my husband tickets to see him a few Christmases back. He made me return them because he thought they were too expensive ($250). I thought it was foolish; that was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, whereas we can spend $250 on all kinds of crap.

The tickets—four of them, for us and our two children—sold within an hour.

“an African-American Queen Charlotte was introduced”

Okay, we’re all used to having to engage in some suspension of disbelief when reading a romance novel, but that is absurd.

Were I a black woman, I would be insulted.

What’s wrong with a real romance that could have happened, say a master and his maid/slave falling in love and escaping to someplace where they wouldn’t have as hard a time. Canada, for example. And there are true examples of that happening, once the slaves were freed. And maybe before, who knows?

The heart wants what it wants.
