A veteran returned a sword he stole from a statue of a Revolutionary War general 40 years ago, telling the head of the Massachusetts town's historical commission that he regretted taking it.
Cindy P. Gaylord, the chair of Westfield's Historical Commission, said a man contacted the city hall saying he had the sword stolen from the town's statue of Gen. William Shepard in 1980, the Springfield Republican reported on Sunday.
Gaylord agreed to give the man anonymity if he returned the bronze sword and arranged for him and his wife to drop it off at her home, she said.

Wonderful! He returned it just in time for the statue to be pulled down by woke Neanderthals.
That’s not how you make it right.
The General probably did something bad in his lifetime,
so his statue is scheduled to be demolished anyway.
lol!
I’m sure the STATUE of limitation has passed.
I know it’s STATUTES, but I just had to say it.
That statue was very limited without his sword.
He should have kept the sword, at least then part of the statue would be intact.
Stolen on a drunken lark 40 years ago. When he and his friends sobered up the next day they were too scared to try and return it.
At least he finally manned up.
He held onto it for forty years, which is probably longer than the statue has to remain up before the ‘woke’ mob has it taken down.
A 40-year-long sworded affair
A friend, in a drunken escapade in college, found a back-door into the university President’s lobby and office. It was an old building with a lot of underground steam tunnels, hidden stairways, etc…
He pinched (stole) large photo of one of the early college Presidents, as a trophy.
The next morning, he realized the consequences of what he had done, swore us to secrecy, and promptly hid the photo far from his campus apartment.
He returned it, anonymously of course, about 15 years later, and also made a pretty large donation to the school
“The returned sword is likely to be preserved by a local museum, the newspaper reported”.
Thank goodness. I can just imagine they put it back and some jerk who read all the stories about it being stolen goes ahead and steals it.
INB4 ANTIFA tears the whole thing down anyway
Apparently this sort of thing happens more often than we think!
At my college, some guys stole the big Ronald McDonald statue and put it inside our dorm elevator. I had to ride the elevator with that clown for the next two weeks.
At least he didn’t hit on you?
And where was the statue during those two weeks?
Pray tell us mere mortals how one should "make it right."
Regards,
Of course he did! 😁
