SAN ANTONIO – For Alamo fans who’ve been waiting for this moment all their lives, officials will finally showcase a preview of the “Phil Collins Collection.”

The Alamo will display a preview of the collection, filled with artifacts donated by musician and Alamo enthusiast Phil Collins, starting on Texas Independence Day on Tuesday. The temporary exhibit, which includes a brass cannon used by the Mexican Army during the battle, will be on display until April 25.

“We are beyond excited to finally share some of the amazing artifacts Mr. Collins so generously donated,” Kristi Miller Nichols, director of Archaeology, Collections, and Historical Research at the Alamo, said in a news release.

Yes, he has been a big-time Alamo collector and benefactor for years. Probably the biggest.

It’s unexpected but apparantly he has a world class collection of artifacts from it. Why the Alamo? I dunno but he has the cash to buy good stuff, that’s for sure.

Yes, its a bit odd. A west-london drummer for a progressive rock band, turned FM-pop star taking a keen interest in Texas Independence History. Who would have imagined?

Ha. That is a good one. Some of the news folk are clever.

Had no idea that Phil Collins is an “Alamo enthusiast,” but very cool that he has a hobby outside his wheelhouse and apparently amassed an impressive collection of artifacts. I have to admit, though, that at first this story seemed so random to me that I was checking for a Bablyon Bee byline. Kind of like a story about how Neil Diamond is an expert on the Punic Wars. (Not that he is, just a similar level of “Huh, didn’t see that one coming”).

I read about it some years ago. He has given rare guns to the Alamo collection many years ago. He is a true fan!

I’m also an Alamo fan. I’ve driven the Mission Trail in San Antonio and visited Washington-on-the-Brazos, Goliad and the battlefields at Coleto Creek and San Jacinto.

I recall reading some years back that Titanic author Walter Lord (A Night to Remember) was basically a walking encyclopedia about the Alamo (in addition to being one about the infamous ship).

Honorary Texan and should be applauded for his generous gift to preservation of Texas History.
This had been known for a long time. His gift is one of a kind. I’d shake his hand and thank him personally if I ever met him over this more than any song he could have written or played. A gift to everyone forever. How often do you get that?

He knows what he likes. And he likes what he knows. :)
