“My question is: why does my drive activity light just keeps running and running ?”
Mine does that often these days. When I check the processes it’s usually downloading Microsoft updates. If you find your computer doing this on Tuesday or Wednesday when you turn it on, that is a likely cause.
Thanks for the update and glad the issue has been resolved.
I’m on Windows 7.
Dissenter (Gab) browser.
DuckDuckGo search engine.
This combo is working for me.
I still get reminders for updates for Windows 7, which I heard isn’t happening any more, but never download or install updates.
I had the same problem at the same time. It turned out that the Freep bookmark I had saved called Freep by the IP and not the URL. I edited the Freep bookmark to call freerepublic.com, and it worked fine.
A series of events would explain the error, but understanding them is not important to curing it.
What are you using for a browser ?
Have you heard about Windows “10”? /s
This one is VERY easy: you’re using an old operating system.
FreeRepublic’s certificate ONLY speaks over TLS 1.2:

Meanwhile, Windows 7’s highest support SCHANNEL (Secure Channel) protocol is TLS 1.1:
Upgrade your OS!
This is like every day, sometimes twice. I’ve disconnected it from the internet but still does it. I’ve had my dad check it and there’s nothing apparently being checked like updates (I’m using W7) - it’s just weird, it’s not scanning for virus’ or running defrag.
Your anti virus could be running a scan or your system could be doing a diagnostic? Something like that and you worry that someone is using your computer for storage.
If you have anti virus, disconnect, start in safe mode and run a scan. Others may have some suggestions. (someone may have already answered the questions! G.L.!
Thanks - there’s no virus scanning going on; I thought that by looking at Task Manager I could see what’s running.
Windows - lights on but no one home : )
The old website could be found at:
http://209.157.64.200/
http://www.freerepublic.com/
https://www.freerepublic.com/
All of those, are now out-of-date and/or not working.
The new website, at the moment of coming alive, after the recent migration, has been, and is:
and if you happen to try and use the new IP address:
that redirects to
https://freerepublic.com/tag/*/index
On Monday, some DNS record - *somewhere* - changed; or some DNS server, somewhere, changed; or, some digital certificate might have changed; or, some combination of such changes.
Among the original three addresses, listed above, one or two of those might have still worked somehow . . . until Monday, yesterday.
*That change* of status, might change again; but, maybe not.
What I wrote in reply 48, aimed to help people resolve the matter (for now).
Throughout yesterday and today (Tuesday, 03/16/2021), it seems to me at least, that there is some lingering DNS problem and/or the host for freerepublic.com, is having trouble.
Firefox
Yeah - that. :-)
I have also been testing different DNS servers.
One of them, Rackspace
198.101.242.72
23.253.163.53
is having trouble.
test
Unplug the power and USB on the modem, for 1 minute, and replug; see if that clears it up. Worked for me.
