Ingredients found in hair dye and anti-ageing cream could delay breast cancer progression by two years, scientists believe.

Early research suggests they boost the effectiveness of radiotherapy when injected into a tumour before treatment.

The cocktail of hydrogen peroxide, which bleaches hair, and hyaluronic acid, which moisturises skin, costs less than £100....

I thought hair dye caused breast cancer?

H2O2 is not an ingredient in hair dye. It is a compound you add to hair dye to accelerate the oxidative process and change the pH to open the hair cuticle. If it was in hair dye, the bottles would explode before they got to the store shelves.

I’ve read for years it may increase lymphoma risk - so where are all the hairdressers with lymphoma?

There are more studies about the breast cancer risk, but lymphoma too. I don’t know if they have studies about hair dressers.

That was the brown hair dyes, not hydrogen peroxide. I think dyes have been reformulated since that was a supposed problem anyway.

h2o2 would not make it explode, but would break
bonds on the dyes leading to their bleaching.

h2o2 has direct effect on the tumors.
iron ions separate it into 2 ions of OH. (free radical).

that is 90+% of the product produced
by the radiation therapy, itself, in its interaction with
water (plus free electrons)

Yes, dark hair dyes, including red. I don’t know if they reformulated them. And I don’t know if the light dyes are proven safe.

NH3 and H2O2? Ok I’ll defer to your expertise but I am pretty sure that will explode inside a sealed container. Not a big explosion in a hair dye size bottle. But something. Unless heavily diluted.

many decades ago, our lab was investigating
mixtures of pure sodium and pure ammonia.
(DO NOT DO THIS).
went very badly. when the metal container used
to electrically examine the mixture suddenly
dissolved it released the pure ammonia.
very very bad noxious smell quickly expanded.

there was no explosion.

Can’t wait for the news story about some ghetto cow running a ‘clinic’ and disfiguring people by injecting them with a peroxide hair-dye cocktail.

I wonder, has anyone ever tried injecting small amounts of various snake venom into tumors?

They’re mixed together just before applying to the hair.

I ahve read that in some African countries, where cancer drugs aren’t readily available, doctors have reduced the size of tumors and delayed cancer progression by injecting alcohol into tumors. It doesn’t surprise me that hydrogen peroxide would have the same affect.

ya, I’m not sure peroxide should be called a ‘dye’ being it’s a bleach, but DM is known for their eyecatching headlines. You’ve answered a question I always had about hair coloring, tho - why there are two bottles to mix, with the top snipped off, and why there are big warnings not to store a mixed solution for next week (not that anyone would mind you). Peroxide must be in one bottle and whatever else in the second bottle. Good trivia to know. Thanks :)
