Why is the COVID-19 pandemic causing a ketchup shortage?
ABC7 News ^ | April 7, 2021 | Staff

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a shortage of one of America's favorite condiments: ketchup.

Restaurants have relied heavily on takeout orders to survive during the pandemic, which has caused a need for more ketchup packets.

But once those started running low, some eateries began pouring out bulk ketchup into individual cups.

The Wall Street Journal reports that low inventory of ketchup is hitting mom-and-pop restaurants as well as chains like Texas Roadhouse.

According to the restaurant-business platform "Plate IQ," the ketchup shortage has caused packet prices to rise 13% since January 2020.

USA Today reports that Heinz is working to increase its supplies in order to produce 12 billion packets a year.

I thought it was just the single serving packets that were a problem. Supposedly the restaurants can’t use reusable ketchup bottles because of covid.

BYOK, there’s plenty on the shelf in my local grocery store.

Or, make the switch to gravy.

That's EXACTLY the problem. Hopefully, as COVID-19 restrictions are fully eased by June 2021, we can go back to using standard dispenser bottles of ketchup and mustard in restaurants.

Ditch the Heinz and go with Hellmans or Whataburger.

I remember when getting ketchup in tiny cups with your delicious saturated fat fries was a thing. I know it was unhealthy but somehow I was active enough to fend off weight and cholesterol.

Kinda like I think my immunity system doesn't need an unsaturated vaccine. I do natural things to build my immunity. I know this doesn't work for everybody, but I'm not trying to be everybody.
