9 injured in explosion of illegal fireworks seized from South L.A. [CA] home
KTLA ^

Police had called in a bomb squad after a tip led them to seize some 5,000 pounds (2,268 kilograms) of illegal home-made and China-manufactured pyrotechnics at about noon, police said.

Pallet-loads of fireworks were placed into an LAPD tractor-trailer and hauled away for disposal but at some point, some of the devices that had been placed inside an armored container on an LAPD big-rig exploded in a burst of flame, demolishing the truck. The blast, caught by news crews, also knocked a nearby car on its side, smashed the windows of several others and blew out windows in a neighboring home.

Almost certainly not.

Smuggled in to sell to the public this weekend.

Was in South Central one Fourth of July in the late 70s and yes indeed. Lots of fireworks.

THIS is why you don’t store 2.5 TONS of fireworks in a residential neighborhood.

Because the police will blow it up in the street without warning?

No, because the police will steal it and then blow it up in the street, probably due to mishandling.

There was enough gunpowder in those fireworks to turn the explosion-proof container and truck into a pressure cooker bomb!

Wow. LA is still having their fireworks? I heard of cities canceling their July 4th fireworks MONTHS ago; I assumed such a place as LA would have as well. My hats off to them.

My county allows fireworks (rednecks, ya know) plus I live in a military town. There’s 3 tents selling fireworks within a 1/2 mile of my house. I’ll be able to sit in my back yard and watch fireworks all weekend!

I do feel bad for the guys in the neighborhood who have PTSD, though.
