The idea of just demolishing the standing part of the building using explosives seems crazy. The falling rubble from the demolition, and the shock waves seem nearly guaranteed to kill any possible survivors, as unlikely as any survivors being present is.

On top of that, who compensates the people whose condos and their personal possessions are being destroyed? I can see the government saying the building is too dangerous to live in, but it isn't too risky for someone to carefully enter to remove valuables from the standing portion.

i guess you missed the part where the existing wrecked building shifted on Thursday ... if they don’t take down this unstable wreck in a controlled, vertical fashion with explosives like is done all the time worldwide (great videos of casinos in Vegas taken down that way), it could easily fall sideways, causing untold deaths and damage ... given the gale force winds possible on Monday (in another part of the article you didn’t bother to read), the existing 13 story wreck could be blown over on Monday ...
